Owls Welcome Fordham

FAU opens the 2009 season this weekend, hosting a three-game series against Fordham University. The first pitch is scheduled for Friday, February 20 at 6:30 p.m. at FAU Stadium

The Owls have enjoyed 10 consecutive-winning seasons, having qualified for six NCAA Regional tournaments since 1999. The storied program is under the direction of John McCormack, who was named the university’s third baseball head coach in July 2008 when former coach Kevin Cooney retired after 21 seasons.

“Unlike any other sport, baseball’s first pitch is special,” said McCormack, when asked about his thoughts on Friday night’s season-opener. “There is nothing quite like opening day in baseball. I am excited for myself, our program and our players. It is important for us, and any team, to get off to a good start and being at home will certainly help.”

FAU was picked to finish fourth in the 11-team Sun Belt Conference by SEBaseball.com. Senior first baseman Travis Ozga was projected as a first team all-league player and classmate William Block was recognized on the online publication’s second team.

“Hopefully we can come out with bang and show people that we are ready play. That we’re contenders,” said Block about starting the season this weekend.

The three-game series against Fordham kicks off a schedule that has FAU playing eight-straight home games to start the season. Twelve of the Owls’ first 13 games will be played at FAU Stadium through March 10.

Opening Weekend Promotions

The first 200 fans Friday night will receive a free FAU bandana. On Saturday, the first 50 fans will receive a free FAU car flag. Bring a baseball ticket stub to the men’s basketball game at 7 p.m. against Middle Tennessee State University after Saturday’s baseball game to receive $5 admission to the basketball game. On behalf of “Baseball Heaven Day” on Sunday, game-goers that attended church or synagogue that morning will receive admission to the game, along with a hot dog, soda and chips for $7. A copy of the church or synagogue bulletin for that day is necessary to receive the promotion. Children also will be invited on the field to run the bases after each Sunday game throughout the season.
