FAU’s Delguidice Earns Multiple Player of the Week Honors
Florida Atlantic University baseball player Nick Delguidice has been named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week and a “Louisville Slugger” National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball News for his outstanding series against Boston College over the weekend.
The shortstop went 8-for-11 in FAU’s series against the Eagles with two home runs, four runs scored and 13 RBI. Delguidice also broke an FAU single-game record with nine RBI in the March 6 win that ended with a score of 15-6. The previous record for RBI in a game by an FAU player was eight by Garry Kamphouse, in a game against Detroit-Mercy back on March 9, 1995.
“Nick is a really good hitter,” said John McCormack, FAU’s head baseball coach. “I kept telling him to keep swinging the bat and good things would happen.”
Before the series started against Boston College, the Miami native was batting .171 and had not recorded an RBI yet during the season. The everyday shortstop improved his batting average all the way up to .353 heading into play this week and has now taken the team lead for RBI with 13. Delguidice has started all nine games this season at shortstop for FAU.
“It was funny because I was sitting next to him on the bench on Saturday and I said to him, I have a good feeling about this game,” McCormack said. “He never lost faith and that is the most important thing.”
The Owls will continue the 2010 season on Wednesday, March 10 with an afternoon game against the University of Pittsburgh. From there, FAU will travel to Troy University for the Sun Belt Conference opening series against the Trojans starting on Friday, March 12.
