Baseball: Owls Pound Boston College 15-6 In Game Two Of Series

Delguidice sets new RBI record in win

Junior shortstop Nick Delguidice enjoyed a record night as FAU exploded for a 15-6 victory over Boston College on Saturday.

The Owls pounded a season-high 16 hits and scored a season-high 15 runs to snap a two-game losing streak and even the team’s record to 4-4.  The victory also earned a split of the first two games of the weekend series, with the tie breaker coming up on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.

Entering the game with a .185 batting average after having just five hits in 27 plate appearances this spring, Delguidice hit two home runs and had two other hits on a 4-for-4 night at the plate.  He also had nine runs batted in to break a FAU record previously held by Garry Kamphouse against Detroit-Mercy during the 1995 season.

Delguidice’s first home run - his first RBI of the season - was a two-run blast over the left field fence that put Florida Atlantic ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning.  His two-run double in the third inning helped the Owls score five runs and chase Boston College starting pitcher Mike Dennhardt off the mound for the second time this spring.

Delguidice continued the hot hitting with a three-run homer to left-center field in the fourth inning – putting the hosts on top by a commanding 11-1 score.

The advantage would blossom to 12-1 before the Eagles scored three runs in the top of the sixth.  However, FAU would put the game away with a single run in the sixth inning and two more runs in the seventh frame.

Left fielder Colby Gratton also had a break-out game for the Owls.  He improved his .231 season batting average after having a 3-for-4 night and scoring three runs.

Center fielder Anthony Mesa, first baseman Dan Scheffler, and right fielder Andy Mee also had multi-hit performances.  Eddie Cassidy drove in two runs and had a leadoff home run in the sixth inning of his first game of the season.

On the mound, junior right hander Mike Gipson had another impressive performance, improving his record to 3-0 on the season with six strong innings.  He allowed just two earned runs and struck out a season-high six batters.  Two of his three victories have come against the Eagles this season as he has been helped by the team scoring 28 runs in those games.
