FAU opening draws interest
– Ted Hutton
Staff and wire reports
Posted March 18 2005
Florida Atlantic Athletic Director Craig Angelos is finding out that there are a lot of basketball coaches looking for a job.
Within 24 hours of announcing that FAU had fired Sidney Green, Angelos said he had more than 25 calls from coaches or their representatives expressing interest in the opening.
"I've got my list, then I have a list of recommendations from people I trust, then there are all these people calling us," Angelos said. "There is certainly no shortage of candidates."
Connecticut assistant Tony Moore reportedly has been contacted by Florida Atlantic. Moore has been an assistant under Jim Calhoun for 11 years and is regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country.
Massachusetts also is looking for a new coach, and Moore is expected to be one of the top candidates for that job. Stony Brook and Sienna also are said to be interested in Moore.
Moore is just the type of candidate that we need. Good to see so many coaches are interested.

One coach may have turned the Owls down, but the Price is still right
In My Opinion
Published Tuesday, March 29, 2005
There will be more going on in St. Louis than three games.
With the Florida Atlantic University men?s basketball coaching job still available, president Frank Brogan and athletic director Craig Angelos will March to the Arch ? not in search of a championship, but a coach.
?The Final Four is a great opportunity to bring active coaches together, coaches that want a change,? said Brogan.
The response that FAU has gotten from people that are throwing their hat in the ring or people nominating them is mind numbing.
?I?m not surprised, whether it?s athletics or academics,? said Brogan recounting how many people apply for jobs on campus when they become available.
One coach who would make a good fit is Jeff Price. He is currently the coach at Georgia Southern. Price led the Eagles to Southern Conference titles in 2001-02 and 2003-04, and is also No. 20 for winning percentage for active Division I men?s basketball coaches.
The silver bullet with Price, though, is that he knows the 561 area code. Price spent six seasons at Lynn and amassed a 134-44 record. After six seasons in Boca, he knows the area quite well by having five South Florida players on his roster this year.
The Final Four is a virtual who?s who of college basketball. Brogan and Angelos will have the advantage of having the job candidates come to them.
There have also been some big names that FAU is entertaining but even if they are lucky enough to land a big name, how will they be able to afford him? And even if they can afford him, his assistants won?t be happy with the leftovers.
FAU didn?t waste any time as they went straight for a high-profile program that would give the Owls instant credibility. Following Sidney Green?s dismissal, FAU contacted Connecticut assistant Tom Moore.
However, even with the friendship that was forged with FAU athletic academic advisor Mike Allen when he worked at UConn, Moore decided to say no. Next year he will enter his 12th season under legendary Jim Calhoun.
?I just didn?t think it was the right fit,? said Moore, who was responsible for plucking junior guard Rashad Anderson out of Lakeland, Fla.
Currently, there are 14 Division I schools that are seeking a coach and that number will be on the rise with Wisconsin-Milwaukee?s Bruce Pearl taking the job at Tennessee, and other mid-major coaches that proved themselves this season ? such as Pacific?s Bob Thomason.
Brogan and Angelos are on a quest to find someone that has a winning recipe to let the Owl faithful devour all the good things that come along with it. They depart on Friday and after 1,212 miles should have a better idea of who will lead FAU.
There is nothing wrong with FAU setting their sights high. However, after Moore passed on the chance to pace the FAU Gymnasium sidelines, who says that someone from Syracuse won?t do the same?
A blue-collar guy would be the best. Green was a high-profile candidate that didn?t work. A better solution could be a guy that has South Florida roots with a proven track record.
And most importantly, he won?t command a high salary ? so the Price is right.

get a top assistant from the big east, the best conference in the county, or go after doherty.

Money is going to be a key issue for any of the candidates Angelos and Brogan want to bring in.

All these big name coaches got there start somewhere, I know jdirico you what instant success, but reality say we are in a financial bind.
I know you still have a bad taste in your mouth with the GREEN era, get your tongue scrapped and some good mouthwash should do the trick and with all the inquiries concerning the position we are bound to find someone that actually wants to coach that will bring some energy back into the program.
