Owl's Ninth Inning Rally Attempt Falls Short Against UM

Preseason All-America closer Kyle Bellamy pitched his way in - and out - of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth as the seventh-ranked University of Miami Hurricanes won a tight game against visiting Florida Atlantic University 3-1 at Alex Rodriquez Park.

Bellamy issued a walk to Travis Ozga to lead off the FAU ninth and both Tom Hatcher and Jeremy Griffiths followed by reaching safely on balls hit in the infield. With Bellamy and the ‘Canes clinging to a two-run lead, a would-be sac fly off the bat of Troy Bubley turned into a rally-killing double play when Ozga was gunned down at the plate via the relay throw from left field.

Bellamy then induced a game-ending groundout to earn his 10th save, allowing Miami (26-10) to bounce back from dropping a weekend series at then-No. 20 Clemson. Miami currently owns the ACC’s second-best conference record behind No. 8 Georgia Tech.

Florida Atlantic (17-16) has lost six-straight. The Owls will host perennial NCAA Regional qualifiers and MEAC champs Bethune-Cookman University Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
