Scouting Bethune Cookman game
FAU won't see Bethune's ace, Hiram Burgos, candidate for Conference Pitcher of the Year, which is too bad. Last time he pitched we scorched him and put 14 runs on the board.
LAST YEAR: After dropping the first two to the Wildcats in May of last year, FAU went on to split the series with 4-2 and 14-2 wins. Then won the one game down here in Boca. Also, interesting to note, Bethune's attendance for the first game was 51.
Bethune went on to go 16-1 in conference play, winning the MEAC and falling in the regional tournament.
THIS YEAR: Bethune has a strong team, anchored by their preseason All-American candidate Jose Ortiz-Rivera (led team with 10 HR's last year and tied with 15 doubles) and preseason all conference catcher Drew Clark (3 hits in 10 AB's this weekend). With the loss of their top RBI man from a year ago, Bethune, which has 22 upperclassmen on this year's squad, will be looking for someone to step up for them.
Namely Osvaldo Torres who had 4 RBI's this weekend, as did Ortiz.
Pitching seems to be the wild card for this team, we'll see what they bring.
MATCHUP: It's too early to tell exactly who Cooney and the coaching staff will run out there for this game as it is so early on the season. Pepe or Mike Salivar could get the nod, but I really have no idea here.
Bethune's stadium dimensions are interesting, with a short porch in right field at 317 feet, then shoots out to 400 at dead center and back in at 325 in left. Hopefully our pitchers can find ways to keep the ball down (but looking at their strikeout totals from a year ago, they are anything but a patient hitting team), although Bethune hit just one HR in two games thus far. The Owls hit 5.
This could be a long one for Bethune fans, all 10 of them. But, don't be surprised if Bethune squeaks by if this is a low scoring affair. No shot of that, I say.
FAU 13, Bethune 6
