SMU meets with Doherty

09:44 PM CDT on Monday, April 17, 2006
By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

SMU sources said Florida Atlantic coach Matt Doherty talked to school officials about the vacant men's basketball coaching opening.

Doherty, a former coach at North Carolina and Notre Dame, visited the SMU campus Monday.

Doherty wasn't available for comment.

SMU is looking for a replacement for Jimmy Tubbs, who was fired two weeks ago.

SMU officials have talked about the job with Rob Evans (Arizona State and Mississippi), Rodney Terry (Texas assistant) and Fran Fraschilla (Manhattan, St. John's and New Mexico).

Incoming SMU athletic director Steve Orsini said last week the school is acting with a sense of urgency.

Doherty has a career record of 90-71 and completed his first season at Florida Atlantic with a 15-13 record. Doherty hasn't coached more than three seasons at any school. He coached at North Carolina from 2000-2003.

>:( :o :( ???

He just concluded his first season so he couldn't go looking before this, but, if SMU decides on someone else or Doherty doesn't want it, from now on any recruit Doherty deals with is going to wonder if he's going to bail before the next season even starts. How can he recruit now that the media just announced he's looking after just one year as head coach.
Yeah, we've been talking about how recruits like nice facilities but before recruits like great coaches. I'm not sure telling kids we may have a dome in 2009 or maybe 2011 is going to recruit too many good players.

Recruits are definetely drawn to great coaches and established programs and the stability they both bring. We have a great coaches who is trying to establish a program and stability ???

Could Doherty be fustrated with the lack of quality recruits he is able to get, hard to tell this earlier in the building process, but again these are just preliminary talks, I am not too concerned yet. He will attract attention for who he is and where he is now coaching, the bigger programs propably feel they can easily lure him away from little FAU. We need to believe in what Doherty has talked about doing ( His Vision ) and have faith that he does want to remain an Owl.

If they call to talk he listens. Compare his worth on the market.

If he initiate the calls to them(ala Syd Green)……that's another story.

Looks like he's still here.

I'm disappointed in Doherty, who talks about a vision and improvement at FAU, then goes job hunting. His worth would be much better if he stayed for at least a few years and made something at FAU, before shopping himself around. He sure seems to be contradicting himself.

Sure, one could say these schools are contacting him, but when he goes there for an interview, he is job hunting.

Give the Owls a chance, Coach!

I don't believe it's right to say your disappointed in Coach Doherty when we don't even know the real story yet. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt.

I think we all knew it was going to be tough to keep him for here for long and I agree he would be more valuable in the long run if and when he puts in a few years and builds the FAU program before leaving. Let's get the whole story first, if there is one, before we start the judging process.

GO OWLS!

Disappointed? I was trying to be civil.

When the man goes to another school for a visit, he's job hunting. Taking a phone call or two from his FAU office is quite another.

Nevertheless, I hope he stays here. If he's here for only a year or two, FAU loses all around.

Its in the local papers now. The post said the info came from an annonymous source so this thing was kept hush to some extent. It will be in more papers soon. I wonder how those 5 recruits feel about this?

The story is by Marcus Nelson. He may have been informed about this by this board.

Do you think any of this has to do with Walters. After all he was one of the coach's FAU was originally going after. Maybe Matt wants to turn this over to Rex. Although that would make a little more sense in about 3 to 4 years.

More speculation would have something to do with the Dome project!

Fauowl44,

I would say that you brought this to Marcus' attention. Doherty probably tried to keep this low key but you know how things go. Someone from SMU may have made a few bucks leaking this to the Dallas Morning News.
