1 a.m. on Bourbon Street

Here's an excerpt from a note I wrote on Facebook to some of my friends. It describes the most amazing thing ever. Jose and others - talk about this moment…

WHAT WAS NEW ORLEANS LIKE?
It was really cool when the 112 students and the 50 people that were already in New Orleans walked down Bourbon Street on Thursday night chanting F-A-U and singing the fight song. What wasn’t cool was when a few overzealous FAU students decided to go into the Memphis bar and try to steal the flag. Our school, our players and our fans have class. For those 10 minutes, we didn’t.

The most BONE CHILLING experience of my life was on Friday night/Saturday morning just after the turn of Midnight, when Bourbon Street turned into Owl Country – literally. I didn’t count, but can estimate about 800 fans were on Bourbon Street. And while a few fans were in the bars, more than 95% of the estimated 800 were actually in the streets.

I cried several times in happiness – knowing that what we have worked towards for so many years was finally here. The cheerleaders, dancers, marching band members, 112 students who came up on the bus, 100+ football players and their parents and families, the fans who provided their own transportation, the 120 faculty, staff and administrators, the cheer, dance and band parents and families and the over 100 alumni members who were all in attendance seemed to be on Bourbon Street at 1 a.m.

The ones who weren’t in the bars were walking in packs of what seemed to be 50; marching down the one-lane road, bars and strip clubs lining both sides, chanting F-A-U , over and over again, for about 30-minutes.

In 20 years when people ask fans: “What was the defining moment in this school's history?” I will answer this: Saturday, December 22, 2007 – 1 a.m.; Bourbon Street.

That’s when I felt more FAU pride than ever before.

Re: 1 a.m. on Bourbon Street

It was great to see the players let lose and celebrate on Bourbon St. just having a good time, had a chance to met a few players & Sincere being one of those and what a class act these kids are.

We have one more game to watch & cheer for FAU and that is the Hula Bowl where Sincere will be playing.

Re: 1 a.m. on Bourbon Street

Cheering for Cerge Sincere in the Hula Bowl will be a pleasure. He'll be wearing his FAU helmet, right?

But don't forget two other potentially interesting games coming up: Early opponents for next season will be playing in bowl games later this week – TEXAS vs. Arizona State on Thursday (Holiday Bowl, San Diego) and MICHIGAN STATE vs. Boston College (Champs Sports Bowl, Orlando) on Friday. Eight months out from FAU's 2008 opener, and it already is preview time. Let's see how the Longhorns' and Spartans' juniors and other returnees do…. As of now, the Longhorns' site lists our opener at Texas for Aug. 30, 2008. Our game at Michigan State is scheduled for Sept. 13, 2008. However, as always, these are preliminary and TV (or something else) could move the dates a day or two.

Love it, great write up… I have to admit we were very happy and a little arrogant, i think it was BOSSMAN, who made us so angry or the national media, but i was so happy, and the Memphis fans were mostly nice, shaking our hands and saying good game all night..

We will all remember this for the rest of our lives, defining moments and we were all a part of it, and some of use were even on TV - Thanks ESPN2…

Re: 1 a.m. on Bourbon Street

Not to mention that the one of the Daquiri Bars had flat-screen tvs and ESPN2 was rebroadcasting the game around 1am. I was with my gaggle of friends when we walked in and then more Owls fans started to pour in.. There were only a few Memphis fans crying in their icy drinks, but the high-energy of the FAU crowd cheered them up that they, too, were dancing along with us. Even better was when the players came in and saw the game was on again and the whole place exploded. That night was one of the best times I have ever had and it was such a joy to see so many FAU fans lining the street and being shoulder-to-shoulder with the very players who helped to win the game.

Re: 1 a.m. on Bourbon Street

That night was so incredibly awesome. It would have been WAY more fun if we didn't have a curfew. The band had to be back at 1:00AM, so pretty much all the players were just getting to Bourbon as we were leaving. But still, walking up and down the street chant "F-A-U" every five seconds was some of the most fun I ever had.
