Scout.com: 2008 Sun Belt Recruiting - What It All Means

7. Florida Atlantic
The class is heavy on … Receivers. Two quarterbacks were brought in, but the offense is in the hands of Rusty Smith for a few years. For now, Smith needs more options to work with getting four wide receivers and two tight ends. QBs David Kooi, a 6-6 bomber, and 6-4 Graham Wilson will wage an interesting battle for the 2010 starting job.
The player who'll someday be a really big deal … QB David Kooi
The player you might care about this year … LB Alex Pattee
What it all means to the real world of college football … The Owls didn't capitalize on the big season. How much longer will Howard Schnellenberger be the head coach? Are there openings to step in and shine right away?

Article talks about the entire Confrence recruiting efforts.

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick @$$ and I'm out of bubble gum.

With all do respect, can we just completely move on from scout.com and their "thoughts and opinions"?  i think all of lasts year's "write-ups" proved them to be what they are:

STINKING CLUELESS.

$50 the guy who wrote this was flipping burgers last week at Wendy's, or delivering newspapers at 4:00am daily…

The Owls didn't capitalize on the big season.

Unfortunately, I think this symbolizes the way that highschool kids and coaches alike see our program.  I really hope the stadium is what it takes to change their perception.

interesting take Walty…

i think:

this is isolated…

there is a select "negative few" who would or do hold this idealism…

HS has been at this a long time, and his comments/words are what counts…

in two years this will all FINALLY fade away…

just out of curiosity, what were your feelings about last years class?

Re: CFN Sunbelt Article on recruiting...

I am glad we aren't respected, this will continue to drive our team to be out to prove people wrong.

I fear the day we are highly regarded, but have no doubts we will be motivated by other things i.e. national championship.

Like things, love people.

Re: CFN Sunbelt Article on recruiting...

Easy.  I am just not sold that this class was what is expected/needed to grow the way we expect to.  I think last years class was better than this years, which scares me because I have said all along that the most important thing is not to take steps back and I am just scared that this class was a step back. I hope I am proven dead wrong.

Again, I dont mean to be pessimistic but I am not going to sugarcoat things because I am a fan.  I think having the #7 class in the Sun Belt coming off the season we had is a sign of something…I am just not sure what its a sign of?  Could it really be that HS doesn't want the higher profile player?  Or could it be that our program is not to where it needs to be for various reasons to recruit those guys?  I think HS is one of the best coaches in the country come gameday…but our incoming talent seems subpar to not only the Big East (which I know it is supposed to be, but people talk about us going there) and our own conference.  I just cant see a reason the Louisiana's should be outrecruiting us in ANYBODY's estimation.

Maybe I am wrong, hopefully I am wrong its just the way things feel.

Question: aren't we the only Sun Belt team without an on-campus stadium?

Also, we don't know much about the recruiting. There have been hints laid around various message boards that FAU courts some people and then just drops them out of nowhere. Don't know if it's true – and we the messageboard people may never know – but that's an additional dimension we could consider.

Honestly, I'm not surprised FIU had a good class (starwise, since we know so little else about them). You know Cristobal was hitting the road hard with a pitch of playing in a new stadium for a school in a cultural epicenter in Miami for a team that needs some star players (so you can get immediate playing time) for a team they believe to be on the cusp of breaking out big. It's a similar approach to what Schnellenberger does… looking for believers in what the team could be.

MTSU and Troy also have lots to say… especially Troy. I'm looking for Troy to make some big waves against Ohio State and LSU… hope those games are on TV because I want to watch… I do also wish they still had Haugabook for those games but maybe they have something else even better in store.

We are the only school to not have an on-campus stadium.

Question:  Have you ever been to Lafayette, LA or Monroe, LA?

Unfortunately I have and there is no way in heck they should be out recruiting us even with a billion dollar stadium.

I am not saying we are not a good football program or that Howard is not incredible…but is it okay if I question why we had the #7 recruiting class in the SunBelt?  It just doesn't make sense to me, there are a lot of conspiracy theories out there about why I just dont know what to believe.  It just reminds me of my friends that tell me they can have the hot girls but like the low-maintenece of the heavy girls…c'mon.  I am not crazy concerned because I do think the on-campus stadium is 75% of the problem, but I am not sure what the other 25% is.  Can it really be because we dont have a traditional campus life?  I am not sure I buy that, Miami is not exactly traditional and they have no problem bringing in outrageous talent.

Re: CFN Sunbelt Article on recruiting...

I think Schnelly realized this year that his old ways in recruiting are not working, he even mentioned it (sugar coated), I don't think this years class was that great but with no on campus stadium, how good could it really be.

Re: CFN Sunbelt Article on recruiting...

does anyone realize that we lost some time recruiting…i know there were a nunmber of mentiones in articles by the media, etc…and he even mentione dit on the NO Bowl pregame show…

Exit:

i dont recall him saying that his ways werent working anymore though…

but i do recall him saying that they had 17 people in one visit and now 16 of them have sign LOI, and were announced on signing day…and that he has NEVER seen that happen before…

thats is UNHEARD OF ANYWHERE IN THE ENTIRE NCAA.

just some food for thought…again, i think it is a mater of who they wanted versus some stars crap that everyone is basing ALL of this upon…

if not, then why do you feel the way you do??
