COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP
Schnellenberger earns extension

After advancing to the Division I-AA semifinals last season, Florida Atlantic University football coach Howard Schnellenberger has no interest in slowing down.

Especially now that the 69-year-old, who was awarded a seven-year contract to coach FAU in July 1999, has received a two-year contract extension through June 30, 2009. Another two years might be added after a contractual review that would take place within five years. The terms and conditions of the contract, including compensation, will be determined later.

''I am pleased this extension allows for consistent leadership and mentoring of our players,'' FAU athletic director Craig Angelos said in a statement. ``We look forward to many more successful seasons on and off the field.''

Schnellenberger would be 74 at the deal's conclusion.

''There's a lot of guys out there, much older than me, that are coaching,'' said Schnellenberger, citing Penn State's Joe Paterno, Florida State's Bobby Bowden, UNLV's John Robinson and the Florida Marlins Jack McKeon. ``I feel like I'm right on top of my game, the kids are responding to me well, and we're about to make great things happen.''

FAU, in its third year of competition, reached the Division I-AA semifinals and finished fourth in the nation.

In the midst of the playoff run, the school announced the program would jump to Division I-A, where Miami, Florida and FSU reside. To facilitate the move, the school switched from the Atlantic Sun to the Sun Belt Conference.

''As president, an alumnus and a football fan, I could not be happier with this contract extension,'' FAU president Frank T. Brogan said in a statement. ``Not only has coach Schnellenberger earned it, but this will give us the stability necessary as we take the football program to the next level.''

Schnellenberger is beloved by his players, many of whom say their success would not be possible without his guidance.

''It's well deserved,'' right tackle Ken Campos said. ``I think it's great with what he's done here. I'm a product of that. I've been here since Day One. He's all business. He's serious. He expects the best out of all of his players, and he works you the hardest so he gets nothing but the best from you.''

The deal was announced just four days before Wednesday's national signing day, when the Owls are expected to add 25 new players. Signing a deal that guarantees his place with the team through the recruits college career was important to Schnellenberger.

''That's important that any coach that's recruiting young players have that assurance,'' Schnellenberger said.

FAU quarterback Jared Allen, who will enter the 2004 season as a fifth-year senior, said the contract extension ''definitely helps'' because it gives the recruits ``security that he's going to be here during their tenure.''
