Very good question, for a division that always thought it was the swithzles because they had a play-off system which DII & DIII also employ struggled to get respect from their D-IA counterparts. The new D1 label is a way to help distinguish themselves and so people might look at the division in better light. What the people in D1 seem to forget that changing ones named will do nothing to change the respect they are getting, instead of continuing to bash the very division they all would want to be part of as far as classifications goes, they should try to earn the respect.

Without questions there are some very good athletes playing at that the D1 level, but we know from first hand experince the differences in the overall talent level and what it means. To me all the new classification will do is create even more confusion, it does nothing to help their image, which is more a reflection on how they carry themselves.

All I know is that I am happy thay FAU has since moved forward and no longer part of that CULTure.

Says who?

Still Div1AA on ESPN:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/teams

and on CBS Sportsline:

http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/standings

and on USA Today:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/polls.htm

Maybe they are calling themselves that? I could call myself a millionaire, but that doesn't make me one…although i wish it did…lol

Until somebody credible (NCAA) says thats the new classification aint worth much…

I think what happened is that they dropped the 1-A and 1-AA classification altogether. The former is renamed to the Division 1 Bowl Championship Series and the latter to the Division 1 Playoff Championship Series. So, it is the Division 1 Playoff.

Right on the money Lm77. That's the reason and the confusion with the new "name" of IAA.

To me it creates more confusion now then before, at least the classifications before where much more clear in terms of identifying the two divisions, I still think that 1-AA didn't like the fact that the 1-AA label made people look down on them and not take them as serious as 1-A. A name change does aboslutely nothing, so why bother.

Just as Lm77 explained. But truth be told, I don't expect the new names to stick. People will still consiously refer to the Playoff Division as 1-AA and the Bowl Division as 1-A. All the major sports networks still look at it that way. It's just not going to stick and the NCAA will find themselves reverting back to the old names.

The only reason for the AA designation was football and it was misleading for other sports. People were starting to refer to Basketball as AA and it was affecting recruiting. The schools that only competed in Basketball didn't like it. I like the change. Eventually the difference between number of scholarships will go away. I hope, eventually teams will be able to chose if they want to compete for the national championship or play in a single bowl game. $$ will dictate that. At one time the NIT was the tournament where you competed for the national Basketball championship. Today the teams go there if they don't qualify for the final 65.
