Second open date gives FAU chance to get healthy

BOCA RATON ? Florida Atlantic has the luxury of not one, but two open dates to rest its injured.

However, even after three consecutive I-A games, the Owls have relatively few players who are hurt. And coach Howard Schnellenberger isn't complaining.

"We're pretty healthy, but you never know what's going to happen with injuries," Schnellenberger said. "We could lose the whole offensive line tomorrow. You just hold your breath and pray a lot."

Senior defensive tackle Johnnie Sloan may be the most pressing concern. He has been playing with an infection in his ankle and has not played as much as had been expected.

Quarterback Jared Allen appears to have recovered from a sprained ankle that hampered him the week of the Middle Tennessee State game.

Running back Doug Parker has a sprained toe that has kept him from practicing this week, but he is expected to return next week.

Junior defensive back Christian Amaya also has been hurt. Amaya tore his ACL last season and has been recovering from a surgery-related deep bone bruise. He has been cleared to play by the training staff, but isn't at full speed. Amaya hasn't played in a game yet, although he did travel to North Texas and Middle Tennessee State.

Stat rankings: The NCAA has created a special category for Florida Atlantic and Florida International for statistical rankings because the Owls and the Golden Panthers are playing a hybrid of I-A and I-AA teams this season.

However, FAU's three games this season have been against I-A competition and have not been watered down by weak competition.

After three games the Owls would rank fairly high in I-A's major statistical categories.

FAU has gained 304.3 yards passing per game, which is more than all but eight I-A teams. The Owls are averaging 441.3 yards per game and would be 21st among I-A teams.

Tight end Anthony Crissinger-Hill's 114 yards per game would make him sixth among receivers.

TV: FAU's Oct. 9 game vs. Texas State is scheduled to be televised by Fox Sports Net. It originally was scheduled as a night game, but the kickoff was moved to 1:30 p.m.

Noteworthy: Youth football players and coaches are invited to watch practice today from noon to 2 p.m., then meet with FAU players and coaches from 2-3 p.m.

Sunday's 1 p.m. practice is open to the public. Both sessions will be on the practice fields.

Nice to hear the NCAA is thinking about our two schools. Hopefully they will think kindly of us the next time they meet and repeal the 15k fan plateau.
