Defensive Strategy

Coach Schnell wasn't too pleased that we gave up that many yards to the one man we had to stop in Saturday's game. Good point. But if you look back at how some teams have hurt us in the past, there may be a pattern.
In this game we played C-2 most of the game. Jackson would slip out into the slot BEHIND the LB's and then run after the catch. Those underneath 10-15 yard pass.
Remember: UCF,Valdota State,Colgate from last year. Midd Tenn and Texas State this year. Short pass and run!

We concentrated on RB Wilson as a threat before the UNC game. After we shut him down it looked like we stayed in that similar coverage and let the LB's spy the QB/RB's. Meanwhile Jackson still continued to sneak in behind the WILL backer and catch and run. He is not a bad open field runner. We can't lose fact of that. He made groups of tacklers miss him many times!

My point? We can make adjustment to this very easily. Coach H knows when he need to pull the LB's out of containment and let them roam. The front 4 have been putting pressure on the QB's all year. I didn't say sacks but rushes. Even in Hawaii. There will be adjustments when needed. Now we need to make the tackles when they get in the open field after the catch.
Another point is that the endzone helps in containment too. Those big passing yards come when the teams are near midfield and beyond. We play coverage to avoid the big play and then tighten up in the 30 yard in range. Not bad strategy. Most team use it from high school through the pros. Hence FG's are only given up.

The defense is playing ok. The offense is playing ok. We will be ok.

Any thoughts???

…. The defense is playing ok. The offense is playing ok. We will be ok. ….

Sums it up!! ;D

This is just the type of defense we play and in the process we do give up a lot of yardage. I will agree that tackling has not been great and feel that Laskowski has not been as dominant as previous years, could be team are playing away or others are stepping up, yet there is nothing that cannot be corrected or an adjustment made. I believe the 3-weeks off has hurt our rythm and our growth process, instead of getting stronger we regressed a little bit.

But, we will be ok.

Laz has missed his share this season. It's not that he's not getting to his man but the tackles are just out of his reach. The positives are that he's forcing the play elsewhere because I'm sure that they know where he is at all time.

LB Higgins and most of the D line has stepped up too. These guys are flying all over the place so eventually the hits will start coming for them again.
