Don't get familiar with all four Titans quarterbacks

From the Tennessean:

Then why is Rusty Smith here?

In 2000-09, the Titans spent exactly one draft pick on a quarterback — Young in 2006. That's why eyebrows were raised when they selected Smith in the sixth round last month.

"I fell in love with him when I watched his technique," Heimerdinger said.

Re: Don't get familiar with all four Titans quarterbacks

I have a good look at all of these Quarterbacks as a Buccaneers fan. I saw Vince Young and Kerry Collins in the Bucs 13-10 win over the Titans in 2007. Young has great mobility and the arm but at times he lacks the accuracy and frankly the leadership skills of a QB. He was the starter in 2007 but you could already see that Collins was going to overtake him. When Young tweaked his quadricep in the third quarter, Collins came in and the Titans only TD drive came when Kerry Collins was in there.

Young was hurt at the end of 2007 and did not start in 2008. However I will give him credit for getting his head out of his butt and overtaking Collins in 2009. Had he played like he did in the last 10 games of 2009, Young never would have lost his starting job.

Kerry Collins is everything you would expect from a veteran NFL starter and backup. He has no issues with leadership and basically is content to take what the defense gives you. If you can not rush him, he will slowly pick you apart with a ball control offense. Unfortunately he is not mobile and vulnerable to blitzing since he is not going buy time with his feet. I believe his arm strength is starting to weaken because he was not the same player in 2009 as he was in 2007 and 2008.

Chris Simms is fool's gold. He has a beautiful long ball and physically he looks the part of a NFL QB. However, he has bad habits that he never learned to break. One he telegraphs where he is going to throw. Defensive Linemen know when to get their hands up and bat down his passes. He also holds the ball too long and gets sacked. The Bucs had smaller QBs in Griese, Garcia, Gradkowski, Rattay and Shaun King but no one excels at getting passes knocked down at the line of scrimmage like Simms. The guy is very tall but he might as well be Spud Webb for all the good that height does for him.

The last criticism is well known but I will repeat it again. Simms is still shell shocked from losing his spleen in the Carolina game in 2006 and nearly dying on the field. He did not play in 2007. He is for 1 for 2 and 7 yards and one sack with the Titans in 2008. He signed with Denver in 2009 to challenge Kyle Orton as starting QB. With the Broncos in 2009, Simms had one start and played in three games. He was 5 for 17, 23 yards, 1 pick and 5 sacks and a lost fumble. In his only start, Simms was booed off the field. Denver put in a limping Kyle Orton in the second quarter rather than stick with Simms.

Simms is like the actor with stage fright. He will rehearse well but once the real bullets start to fly, he will fold. All three quarterbacks have some issues but I would keep Rusty and Collins before Simms. Young is the man but defenses will now have an offseason to adjust to him. Young's mobility and running ability complements the power running game they have with Chris Johnson. Young's problem is consistency because the talent is definitely there.

simms has some bad, bad personal stuff about him. one thing regardless of their athletic ability, rusty has character and will be an asset in the clubhouse.

Simms just sucks. He rode his name all the way to the nfl. He never should have even been the starter at texas.

a female friend of mine went out with Simms best friend from high school. they still hangout now. there's some sketchy sh!t that everyone in the league knows.

Not every reporter prints everything they know. Especially when its about character and its not illegal and doesn't effect the team.

Re: Don't get familiar with all four Titans quarterbacks

As a Bucs fan bad season ticket holder, I saw every game Simms played with Tampa including the one in which he almost died. He had a good run in 2005 after Brian Griese went on IR. But during the wildcard playoffs, the Redskins DC discovered his weakness. He telegraphs his passes and throws it way too low despite his height. The first game in 2006, the Ravens batted more balls down than Simms completed as passes. He was awful in 2006 with the spleen game against Carolina in Game 3 being his best game. He had 1 TD and 7 ints when he went on IR.

He showed a lot of courage and rallied the Bucs from a 17-0 deficit to a 24-23 lead before the Bucs blew the game. He almost died on the sideline when Carolina rallied and hit the game winning FG.

In 2007, Simms tried to come back in the preseason. He was scared.  Even though he was suppose to be healthy, all I saw in preseason was a scared rabbit. i have NFL Season ticket so I followed him especially when he went to Denver. Unlike Tampa in 2007, he showed some promise in the preseason. Many Denver writers thought Simms was going to replace Orton. However his one and only start against the Chargers convinced the Broncos that Orton with a badly sprained ankle was a better player than Simms.
