When I was 10 years old, my mom says I use to keep a stack of old newspapers next to my bed. She said I would read them late at night, over and over again. I don't remember any of this, but according to her, it was the start of my writing career.
I like to think my career started when I moved to South Florida.
It's been an eventful four years, but my time in Boca Raton is coming to an end. I’m headed to North Carolina to work for the Rocky Mount Telegram, where I’ll be covering high school sports and the ACC.
If you had told me when I first arrived at FAU as a baby-faced freshman, that I would graduate with a journalism degree and take a newspaper job, I would have called you crazy. But I believe everything happens for a reason.
I first got involved with the Owl's Nest when I decided to change majors. I wasn't happy with what I was doing, and was ready for something new. A roommate of mine introduced me to Rick, and well, the rest is history.
Rick told me up front that he could not only make me a better writer, but he could also make me a better person. I just had to buy in.
I owe a lot to Rick and Owl’s Nest, but there are a lot of other people who have helped me grow along the way.
I don't know where I would be without FAU athletics and the access they gave me. I'll never forget sitting down with some sophomore fullback Alfred Morris and discussing his candy-based diet. Or the time basketball coach Mike Jarvis didn’t answer my questions because he simply didn’t like the context I asked them in. Those are lasting memories I’ll always have.
I also wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn’t for Dieter Kurtenbach. Dieter not only saw potential in me, but he pushed me to take my writing to the next level. He told me it didn't matter where I went to school, I just had to outwork everyone else.
I could write another 400 words thanking people, but instead of doing that, I would like to address you the reader. You have allowed me to pursue this career. You have put up with my desire for recruiting coverage (Hey! it’s actually relevant now) and you have let this hack grow up.
I'm not sure what my future holds, but I'll never forget the Owl's Nest. It was my first writing gig, and my first taste of the industry.
So if you're ever in the greater Raleigh area, shoot me an email or tweet. I'd love to catch up with someone from Owl Nation.
