FAU wants to host OB teams - Palm Beach Post

MIAMI SHORES ? After Penn State held several practices at Florida Atlantic last season while preparing for the Orange Bowl, FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger decided he would like to hold more Orange Bowl workouts there.

FAU is working on a plan to be one of the official sites for teams practicing for the Orange Bowl.

"I've talked to the Orange Bowl committee and I've told them we'd be interested in doing that," Schnellenberger said.

'We've got two practice fields, nine classrooms, a training room. … That's just what I would want if I were taking a team to a bowl."

Currently, the Orange Bowl's two official practice venues are at Barry University in Miami Shores and Nova Southeastern University in Davie.

Neither school has a football program and the squads practice on converted soccer fields.

FAU would like to lure a team to its campus because of the prestige and a chance to showcase its athletic center, which was built six years ago.

Last season FAU played host to Penn State for four days before official Orange Bowl practices began.

"They chose to come down before the period the bowl sets up," Schnellenberger said. "It was kind of spur of the moment, but they had an exceptional time."

FAU extended an invitation to Louisville, where Schnellenberger coached from 1985-94, but the Cardinals declined and arrived on time on Tuesday.
