FAU will get credit for $250,000 worth of tickets sales to Motor City Bowl

And here's why, as reported by the Mercury News in San Jose.

"When Sunday morning broke, it looked like SJSU would go bowling. Bowen and WAC commissioner Karl Benson were confident the Spartans would grab a spot in the Motor City Bowl on Dec. 26 in Detroit. But Sunday afternoon, bowl officials decided to invite Florida Atlantic (6-6) to play Central Michigan.

FAU did finish strong (five wins in its last six games) and has a well-known coach (Howard Schnellenberger). Also, FAU's conference, the Sun Belt, agreed to purchase an additional $250,000 worth of tickets, according to a source. The Motor City Bowl offers a $750,000 payout. But like all bowls, it has a ticket guarantee: Participants must agree to purchase at least $500,000 in tickets, with the bowl eventually writing a check for the difference.

Benson and Bowen formulated a counterproposal, but when they approached the bowl officials, they were told it was a done deal: the bowl had picked FAU."

The confrence has done this before with Troy a few years ago when they played in a now defunct bowl in California.

Just bought four tickets for the game!  Woo hoo!  Of course I won't be able to use them but hopefully at least one of the kids that gets to go will cheer for the Owls.  :)
