Finally! Some Football News....

Nothing too grand but at least it's something to read. How long until season starts? :-/

FAU has many gaps to fill

For the first time since Florida Atlantic was preparing for its inaugural season in 2000, the Owls head into spring practice not knowing who their quarterback will be in September.

That is just the most visible of the battles that will be going on starting today when FAU has its first of 15 spring practices.

FAU is coming off a 2-9 season, its first at the Division I-A level, when its roster was filled with freshmen and sophomores who were often overmatched.

While most of the starters are back, many have only a tenuous grasp on their spots, and the departed veterans left big gaps. One of those is at quarterback, where a battle is expected among Sean Clayton, McKinson Souverain and freshman Rusty Smith.

"I'm really pleased with all three of them," coach Howard Schnellenberger said. "They will all get work and try and see who becomes the top choice."

The Owls never had a true fullback last season, and Schnellenberger said that should be resolved with the return of Aaron Sanchez and William Rose, both hurt last year.

One offensive-line starter, Stetson Wilson, has left, but Schnellenberger said there is a strong group remaining, including Nello Faulk, Antes Perkins, Nick Paris, Jared Smith and John Rizzo.

"We probably have more depth there than we ever have," Schnellenberger said.

Defensively, the Owls will need to replace middle linebacker Shomari Earls.

"We have a lot of young talent at that position. They will need to get some experience in a hurry," Schnellenberger said.

How do we look at linebacker otherwise in terms of game experience?

Middle is THE hardest position to learn, especially since in most schemes they are the defensive quarterback.

Shomari was the man and really showed up every game, do our weak or strong side LB's have the potential to step up to mid?

#45 Cerge is not a bad one to replace Earls in the middle. He's a little shoirter but he plays smart at the LB position.
