Football Team Kicks Off Spring Practice Slate

Spring Practice got underway today at the Oxley and I guess you could say it was a mixed bag with a little bit of everything - BUT hitting.

In just helmets and jerseys, with no pads, the players participated in a variety of drills and formations designed to get back into the flow of things.

It's also back to basic on a number of levels with the overhaul that will be taking place on both sides of the ball.

Must say there were quite a few dropped passes by the receivers. And some missed assignments by the secondary and linebacker core drew considerable jawings from both Coach Van, and new defensive backs coach Dick Hopkins.

But overall, guess you could say it was a "good day":

For the first time since 2006, the Owls worked on protecting a new quarterback with future senior Jeff Van Camp under center. Several players also worked under center and across the offensive line, which will be entirely new in 2010.

Van Camp welcomed the return of Rob Housler, who sat out in 2009 for the opportunity to start in 2010.

The offensive line is clearly different than that of last year, and will be starting anew. Footwork drills and technique look to be the staple food for them for the next few weeks.

The team will take Thursday off and return to action on Friday at 3:30 pm with a slate very similar to today.

The first padded session will be on Saturday with a start time to be determined.
