The 1st half wasn't all bad. We threw the ball well but went away from it. The missed blocking assignments hurt a few drives too.
Defense=B+
Considering they were on the field most of the night but just got worn down. They kept the game close despite bad field position due to turnovers.
Special Teams=D
Botched punt return. Onside kick recovery by OSU. No return set up during the early part of the game when everyone was fresh.
Quarterback=C+
Ran for his life all night. He did hold onto the ball too long on several occasions. The fumbles also hurt his grade.
Coaching=D
OK here goes.
1-Blitz package was non existent on several 3rd and long.
2-We don't have a lot of beef on offense. What happened to the shotgun. His scrambling ability probably will benefit more from the gun.
3-We went away from the short passes late in the 1st half when it was working. I guess we were trying to set up the running game.

Offense: D
We where able to substain drive early on, but the OL was getting pushed around pretty good. OSU did what it had to do by keeping the pressure on - what I don't understand is why didn't Embick play out of the shot-gun more and for that matter he seemed to make more plays when he roll out of the pocket!! The inexperience showned tonight - these things can be fixed and you need to expect the inconsistantcies from a young offense.
Defense: A
Hard to fault them for being put in the position there where in all night - they did an excelent job of keeping the game in control, it could have easily turned ugly very early in the game. I thought even thought they got tired, they still played tough to the end, not giveing OSU much
Special Teams: F
:-X
Coaching: C+
I didn't like the play calling in the secong half - Offense bring the grade down, I thought the defense made the proper adjustment as the game went along, much better then in the past, a positive. Now the offense need to make the adjustments quicker as well.
Overall: Great effort by the guys, yes I would have like for the offense to have done better, but lets face it we played two tough games in a 10 day period - the young guys got a ton of expereince from this and this team as much to look forward to - they have shown that they can play with intensity

No coaching or QB ratings?
OldOwl..I have to agree about the team. I said it in another thread. We will not go winless this year!

They were put in some tough spots all night but responded very well. A little bit of missed tackling, but overall a good night for the D. It got a little sloppy at the end of the game, but that was to be expected. They proved they belonged on the I-A level tonight.
Offense = C-
They looked decent early, but as the game went on they had a rough time protecting Embick. The running game was slightly improved over the Kansas game, and I liked Embicks mobility. I wish they would roll him out more, he's much more effective throwing on the run than as a drop-back passer. The lack of experience showed tonight, but in conference play, this group should be able to put up some points.
Special Teams = D
Not much good could be said, especially about the 1st quarter. Lots of rookie mistakes, but not compeltely unexpected given the short week of practice. They did make account for the only scoe, so I won't give them an F.
Coaching = C
The play calling in the 2nd half was confusing. Not kicking a FG down 20-3 was a bit of a shock. Why not cut the lead to 2 scores? Also, I know that the o-line was having a tough time giving Embick time to throw, but I don't understand some the calls for running the ball on 2nd and 3rd and long. The D was well prepared though.

Poor execution and too many penalties. The O-line didn't hold up too well against the OSU rush and they blew numerous assignments throughout the game. Hints of good play by receivers and the occasional nice run out of the backfield. Overall, lack of consistency.
Defense = A-
Played well with their backs against the wall virtually all night. Really played strong in the first half with lots of big hits and great speed. They will be the highlight of this team all year long.
Special Teams = D+
Muffed punt return is the obvious problem. Poor kick coverage was also problematic. A few bright spots. The field goal team got 3 on the board. A nice job of downing a punt on the two yard line during punt coverage. OSU tried to do the same and couldn't.
Quarterback = C-
Completion percentage was down and yardage was way down. Not what I expected from last weeks SBC player of the week. Embick often was looking to run as opposed to stepping up in the pocket when under pressure. In his defense, at many points in the game, running was the only option as he was being chased from all angles. I think this got to him and he started to take off a little too quickly late in the game.
Coaching = C-
Offensively, we should have been in the shotgun more often and thrown the ball downfield. Too much reliance on the run. Did anyone notice that Herbstreit kept saying that FAU was relying on the run because it is the strength of the offense? What was he talking about? Defensively, coaching was good.

Schnelly teams has always been known for passing.
They also had an interesting comment about FAU still running the Pro-Set I formation.
