Re: New Football Writer

scott i have a technical qu for you. since our o-line is somewhat new and doesn't have a lot of depth you would think teams will be blitzing a lot. do you see our running game being just as good as our passing game with the holes that will open from the biltz's comboed with the fact alfred morris and stinson being big tough guys that can run over a linebacker? or keeping the defense honest and letting our passing game flourish?

Re: New Football Writer

Exit 39….To answer your question, there is no doubt that a new offensive line that lacks depth can create some concerns….but here are the keys. The Owls should benefit by the return of Tight End Jason Harmon, who last year at this time suffered a serious injury during the spring game….that caused him to miss the 2008 season. I can see Harmon being a large part of this offense not only as an extra blocker but as a short route receiver who has the capabilities of turning small gains into larger gains by hurdling over tacklers. With Harmon as a blocker at times, this will give QB Rusty Smith more time to go long with his current receivers or seek to use his running back to make catches. We'll see which running backs emerge and instead of having a clear 1,000 yard rusher like the Owls had in Charles Pierre, you could see a running back by committee to make those numbers. Finally, we know that Smith can compile passing yards, but for him to emerge as a legitimate pro prospect, he has to transform his style from a drop back passer and show mobility out of the pocket so he can find those alternate receivers on the fly or be able to rush for first downs on his own to move the chains. So as you can tell, there are a combination of things the Owls can do to offset the offensive line situation.

Re: New Football Writer

Interesting,

Do you think the arrival of Jeff Brohm as QB coach will be able to assist Rusty Smith with these improvements he needs to make this season?

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick @$$ and I'm out of bubble gum.

Re: New Football Writer

The addition of Jeff Brohm can only help. He has NFL Experience and hearing a different voice aside from Gary Nord will only enhance his knowledge of the game plus improve his skills.

Re: New Football Writer

I didn't think our O-Line was "somewhat new".  I believe they all have game experience.
