Re: No punt offense
Eliminating the punt completely is silly. I could list a multitude of scenarios that you would be an absolute idiot not to punt the ball away. I do think that there are alot of circumstance where coaches on third down should be thinking two plays to pick up a first as opposed to the old thinking but it depends on so many factors, how your defense is playing, score, timeframe in game, running game, etc. etc.

Hey, I don't mean to steal credit for someone else's thread, yes I did search, but did anyone else read the article about the High School football team that does not punt away the ball? I think the coach's name was Pulaski or something, but it was pretty cool. It's always good to see a team that thinks outside the box, I mean everyone punts cause that just "what you do", but there is no rule that requires it. Just like watching last night's game with Troy and MTSU. I haven't gotten to see the dual QB system cause they are never shown on TV, and I did not get down to the FAU game, so it was pretty amazing to watch, even though it did not work. As I said, if I brought up an old thread, sorry, but I was just looking for some other people's thoughts or comments on eliminating the punt. It seems to work, at least in HS for this team.
I think the thought of going for it on 4th down is valid in many cases, however, personally, I would struggle with that decision deep in our own territory. I think it is a very interesting concept and the coach in the article has done some homework on the subject. I think it may be better utilized at the High School level. One thing is for sure, if a team starts to win a lot of games by doing it, someone else will try it as well. Here is the article (scroll down to TREND 3):

Re: No punt offense
I agree that not punting the ball deep in our own territory is stupid, or maybe brave. I do see how it could benefit you on say a 4th and 2 on the opponents 40 for example. Maybe you don't have a lot of faith in your kicker, and a punt gives the risk a of return, or at least allowing the return team to advance thier position. I guess you could argue the point either way, but I know that there have been plenty of times watching a game while I thought "why don't they just go for it"
Dusky,
by the way cool avatar, are the sails around yet? Thanks for the info on MTSU, I don't get to see the owls over here in St. Pete, I get all my updates from you guys on here, unless I get down to a game.
