Non-conference games and the same story

Non-conference games and the same story

I have been a die hard owl fan for years and i love this team…but games like this can be heartbreaking! Over the years fau has played different teams from every BCS conference except the Pac-10 and the story is still the same.  Every year its a body bag game and every year its the same advanced training game.  I think fau has the capability to put up a fight against a lot of teams, but the scheduling is brutal.  We get man handled and when we do keep it close we dont put up an effort to make a good showing….like yesterday.  Over the course of 5 years the only games we lost close was against Kansas in '05( embick as QB), South Florida('07), and Michigan State.  I think there needs to be an overhaul on the coaching end…get some guys who give a damn about their jobs.  The play calls are predicatable and idiotic.  Like running on a 3nd and 10 ….really how can we build momentum and get on long drives with unbalanced play calling.  How can fau build a better fan base when they let fans down in this magnitude on national tv.  Why do we play so miserably on tv on the road with these bcs teams? We need the money but to let every season be put on hold playing these games is unfair.  Why hype fans to go to Texas or USf when you are playing to lose or to show a mere showing by pulling out your senior qb for some unproven guy.  If I was a recruit and I saw that game yesterday I wouldn't choose fau as my school of choose because of the mentalitiy, not giving in but putting up a fight. I know some fans might disagree and others might agree but this is the same problem year in and out.  This falls back on the coaching…if the mindset is to not go in and win the players mindset will be the same. Schellenberger is safe and if fau ever fired him the program will never be the same its like disowning your father.  We need better coaches, a new attitude and execution….to get better recruits and to make more of a showing….for our growing success into the future into a bigger conference or more bowl games.  If jacksonville state and james madison can do it why cant we its simple……..THEY PLAY TO WIN THE GAME….it doenst matter if the spread is 50 points..if they dont have quality players in the end the W is all that counts. I know I was mad as well with ths loss but the excuses need to stop …football is a man sport and we have the talent the potential to do great things…lets just moe on and try harder.

Re: Non-conference games and the same story

I am also frustrated with these types of games, but you need to keep things in prospective. We are not at the level of those schools yet. They have been playing football for a 100 years and this is our tenth. We are a fast-tracked program and have had a good level of success, but they are BCS conference schools who a lot of teams have trouble playing against. The losses that drive me crazy are the ones against the UAB's of the world….teams that are on our same level. Look, you can complain about the coaching staff, and while I love HS for what he has done for the school, a lot of your criticism is valid….but you also need to realize that he is coaching this team this year and next. That is not going to change regardless of record and I believe he deserves that much. I also think that we will see a new staff in 2012 unless we are bowl-winning good in 2011 and even then, HS might decide to step aside.

So even if we lost yesterday 50-0 instead of 30-17, nothing has changed at all. The goal is the SBC title and getting back to a bowl…I thought our team played pretty well especially offensively. I think the big test is how we play in two weeks against N Texas. That is a must win if they want to win the conference.

I totally disagree. It was more than possible to win that game yesterday. Yes, we made many stupid mistakes via penalties however, to have the coaching staff pulling for the wrong team is unforgiveable. The damage done yesterday was a TRUST thing. I feel very bad for our boys, especially our Seniors.

Ha ha, you're delusional. "more than possible" is the same as my chances of hitting the lotto. We were in a position to make the score a little more respectable but you do recall why we had the ball on that final drive right? A great Hill interception in the endzone…AFTER MSU marched down our throats for another drive. It's not like our D was able to do much with those running backs.
I wish we would have gone for the TD because I enjoy risk, and plays like that are the only way you catch breaks and cause upsets but don't think we were on our way to winning that game and coach screwed it up! That's not the case.

Re: Non-conference games and the same story

Agreed.  While at one point in the game, it perhaps was "winnable", at the point in question, it would have taken an absolute miracle just to TIE the game.  What were the odds that the Owls score, convert the 2 point conversion, get the onside kick, then march down field and score again and convert another 2 point conversion??  1 in a 10,000? more?  Yes, I would have gone for it too, but let's not kid ourselves here. Michigan State was the better team.  I'm glad we made the game interesting, but it would have taken a perfect game to beat them and that is certainly not what we played.

To hell with the odds! It's a game. You go for it.

These things happen. Look at the Boise game, the Jax State game or a handful of other games last week alone! You play to win or you don't play at all. I used to think all coaches felt that way.

I think the game we are going to give South Florida this year will open some eyes

If you mean open some eyes about how many yards B.J. Daniels is probably going to gain on the ground on us, then yes, it will open some eyes.

True. My roommate said BJ is a s*** passer (4 interceptions) but ran all over UF. Imagine what he'll do to us.
