OK.The D1-AA championship....

The parity in college football is very interesting to note with respect to the 1-AA championship. You never know who is going to win which is the great thing about it. Southern Illinois was ranked #1 in 1-AA for 11 weeks and lost by one point in week two to 1-A Northern Illinois at NIU. However, despite an undefeated 1-AA season Southern lost in the first round to Eastern Washington. It is really a toss up. I think FAU would have done well given the success in 2003. However, anything can happen in the playoffs.

SIU and Ga Southern losses really suprised me! The on field playoffs in D1-AA ball is amazing.

They probably are still saying "we don't need no stinkin' computers"!

I think if we stayed in I-AA we would be celebrating our first football national championship. This year we were undefeated against I-AA and lower competition, and surprisingly .500 against I-A competition!!!
But I'm sure those who went on the Hawaii trip will take that trip instead of going to Chattanooga, TN. ;D

An intersting thing to note is that most of the top 1-AA teams in this years playoffs had 1-A transfers at key positions. Both James Madison and Montana had transfer QBs from big time 1-A programs. Furman had Ingle Martin from Florida at QB. SIU had Auburn transfer Brandon Jacobs at RB. A few others had 1-A transfers as well.

I was really surprised that GSU & SIU didn't make it deep into the playoffs - they seemed to be playing at a different level all year. Great win for JMU!!

This bring up a point that some analyst brought up concerning 1-A having a playoff which I thought was interesting. Will the playoffs over shadow the regular season. With the playoffs - having one loss won't be as critical to any one team other then seeding purposes.

Now, 1-A teams work hard to protect that perfect season on the road to a national champion which has a lot to do with their OC scheduling (weak for the most part), which in 1-AA for the most part the tougher teams schedule those OC games with 1-A teams because 2 or 3 losses don't mean as much with a playoff system, but winning your conference is key.

If a playoff sytem did occur at the 1-A level, could it strenghten the now weaker conferences, because now then may feel they have a shot at the title

Thats interesting, I've only really been following NCAA football since FAU got their team. I am not too sure how the bowl system works but either way I think the playoff system is much more thrilling and entertaining. There are so many different bowl games that I lose track of whats what. A playoff system would be awesome, you would know exactly who is in contention and who you may have to play to get there. Maybe some semi-final and final games can be given bowl names??

Just a thought..

I like the playoff system myself - it does generate a great deal of excitement that build every round a team advances. Our run last year was pretty exciting and help generate a lot of excitement for the team & exposure as well.

I don't think the BCS is ready for it thought. They rather tinker with the computers.
