Pre-season predictions

I picked up a couple of pre-season magazines to see how things are expected to shake up this fall. In both magazines, Lindey's and Athlon, FAU was picked to finish in the bottom five of the 119 1-A teams. Not very good. Athlon had a nice little section focusing on the SBC that noted the experience of FAU going into this season as opposed to last season. However, they pointed to the QB position as the big question. A second big question was the defensive line, surprisingly not the offensive line.

Any thoughts on how this season will play out? Where will FAU finish? Strengths and weaknesses? Wins and losses? SBC record?

Pre-season predictions

We will continue to be at the bottom of that list, till we start winning on a more consistant bases - this year we will continue our re-building process, but we will have a more veteran team, which after last year very young team is to be expected, but still leaves us to be a very young team.

With the very tough OCC schedule - deemed one of the toughest schedule in 1-A and the very volatile SBC, any team can beat anybody on any given Saturday, you are left with a very tough time speculating just how this team will do during the course of the season.

Way to early for pre-season predictions IMO, I would like to see the team during Summer sessions first.

What we are likely to see is: Clayton being named the starting QB, with Smith getting some quality playing time - Schnellenberger will probably go back to playing the back-up QB in the 2nd quarter. With an improved OL, a healty FB and capable RB in the back field (this will take some pressure off the QB a bit) this will enable us to have our most balance offense, with a run to set-up the pass mentality (pro-style offense), we ever had since our inception of this program. This offense will be much improved from last years unit with decent results.

As far as the defense goes, I am waiting to see who is willing to step-up and make some noise, the DL will be young, but we shouldn't see any drop-off from last year, instead the line should be better (how much is the key question ?) I do beleive that we have capable play makers at every position, how will they gel as a unit still needs to be determined. Key questions will be how much better will the DL be, we need to improve on our Run defense from a year ago if we are going to make a run for the SBC title this year.

This will be a very important summer session and from what spring presented, I see us being a much more confident group going into this season, then last.

I agree. It is hard to say where we will be record-wise. Obviously the OOC schedule is very tough, so we are probably looking at 4 losses there. But the Sun Belt is wide open. I can see any team finishing first just as easily as finishing in last place. Hopefully with the experience we gained last season, we can make a run at the conference title.

UNT has been around for a while and that may explain why no one expects them to stay in the cellar. They finished in last place in the SBC behind FAU.

FAU has no real history although the turn around from 2003 to 2004 was fantastic!!!!!

I have been an Owl fan for years so I hope I'm proven wrong but I predict pain, pain and more pain. On a slightly different subject: We need that stadium!

its obvious were going to be better. ideally win more sunbelt games then we lose would be a successful season. taking one occ game would be ideal.

the talent is going to cap off until we start putting shovels in the ground.

I really agree with that last statement. The next best thing would be to have the stadium approved.

I have to think that Brogan and even the Board understands the ramifications of not doing some sort of stadium in the next three years. Unless they want our Football program to become a "coulda been" then they need to bring a solid plan to the table. I find it impossible to believe that the right design can't allow for a staged stadium facility that evolves with the program.

There is an explaination on the dome thread that explains why they are going dome. It was explained by Angelos on his Q & A page on the FAU web site. I copied and pasted it 6/14.

I don't know how old this board is. I've been a member for about a year. I don't know what the talk was from 2001-2004. I know a bunch of posts were lost.

Who here had any idea FAU would go 11-3 in 2003 AFTER a 2-9 season in 2002 with a tougher schedule, beat a D1 team and other D1AA playoff teams to get to the semi finals? Who had any idea that would happen???

We have the same exact in-conference schedule as last year. Kids returning that played against BCS teams. Unfortunatley no Allen or Embick, the down side.

We are getting slammed by the media because of the 2-9 season last year. Everyone expects UNT to recover after their 2-9 season and do much better this year. No one seems to have any expectations for FAU to improve.

We might get one OOC game, maybe. If we get an offense going look for at least 4 SBC wins. Probably more but no less than 4 which includes the return of the Shula trophy.
