Trying times for Edgecomb

BOCA RATON ? There was a note tacked to the door of Florida Atlantic running back DiIvory Edgecomb's room when he returned home at 6 a.m. Sunday after the Owls' all-night flight following their 46-7 loss to Minnesota.

The message was from one of his roommates ? "Good Touchdown."

Edgecomb looked at it and had to smile.

Edgecomb doesn't bunk with any of the other football players and instead lives among regular students in the dorms at FAU.

"That was pretty cool that they watched the game and saw me score," Edgecomb said.

Until this season, Edgecomb was a walk-on for FAU until he earned the starting assignment as the Owls' featured running back in training camp.

Scoring the Owls' only touchdown in their loss to the Gophers was bittersweet for Edgecomb. After leaping over the pile, he sought out the referee and calmly handed him the ball. There was no reason to celebrate his second touchdown of the season with FAU trailing by 40 points. "Coach Schnellenberger always says act like you have been there before," Edgecomb said. "I was just trying hard even though it was late. Some of the players were upset we were losing, but at my high school we won games and we lost games and I'm always trying hard whether we were losing or winning."

Schools were concerned with his size and he only was recruited by Division I-AA Southern Illinois while he was a senior at Plantation-American Heritage High School, where he led Broward County's small schools in rushing with 1,690 yards and 18 touchdowns and was on the all-state Class 2A team.

FAU invited Edgecomb to walk on last season, hoping to put some weight on a player who seemed to hit the open holes. He practiced with the scout team in 2004 and battled during training camp to be named the Owls' starting running back.

"He needs a lot of game experience and a lot of success," FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger said. "He was with us last year and really caught everyone's eye. He's quick and powerful."

Edgecomb, who has been trying to gain weight and has just 185 pounds on his 5-foot-9 frame, is holding up well.

"It's great to think we're going to have him for three more years," FAU running backs coach David Serna said. "He's very sound on assignments. He has a great work ethic. He's a diamond in the rough. He has a chip on his shoulder and wants to show schools they missed out on him."

Even after poundings against Kansas, Oklahoma State and Minnesota, Edgecomb is anxious to get back on the field for this week's game against Louisiana-Monroe.

"The tackles don't bother me," Edgecomb said. "I think I have proved I am durable from the hits I took during my redshirt year and this year."

Being tough runs in Edgecomb's family. His father, Kevin Edgecomb, was a receiver at Florida State in 1980 and he is a cousin of Raiders fullback Zack Crockett. His brother, Henri, also played at FSU.

Edgecomb's other touchdown came on a 66-yard pass against Kansas.

"Right now I'm just trying to keep doing what I am doing and hopefully the coaches will notice and keep giving me a chance," Edgecomb said.
