Refelctions on Fan Fest

They dropped the ball today, what a boring event. Last year was MUCH better than today's Fan Fest. No food, hardly anything to do, it was disappointing.

From what I saw of the scrimmage the team looks…ok. IMO Rusty Smith had better control of the offense until his interception on the first drive. Clayton didn't look that good at all. BJ Manley looked pretty good, so did the big tight end, Grant. Avery Holley had some good moves at Wide Out, I'm excited to see him play both sports.

Then the lightning came, we left. I didn't see too much, I'm not even sure if they kept the scrimmage going so anyone else that was there, please give us your thoughts.

Couldn't make it at the last minute…so any input would be great. How many people showed up? ???

Eventually the rain stopped and they finished the scrimmage. IMO Rusty did a much better job than Clayton. Rusty needs to look over at Sanchez a bit more there were so many plays where he was just wide open. Avery did have some good plays but boy is he small hope he doesn't get hurt out there.

This was definetely a strip down versus of Fanfest from previous years where they made it an event, yet I did notice more students in attendance then previous years and a nice crowd was there. After the detay due to lighting, a good portion of the crowd did stay which was good to see.

I will also agree and pretty much comfirms my initail assessment as to who should be named the starter at QB - Rusty Smith. How will a Freshman handle the pressure of starting his first collegiate game in "Death Valley"? - no easy task even for a veteran player more or less a veteran team, a different atmosphere then Kansas (last years opener). You are throwing an unproven QB, wheter it's Clayton or Smith into the fire with every possible chance to fail. These are the type of games that develop character - who will handle the pressure better. Clayton has trouble handling snaps at a scrimmage game, how is he going to handle a snap with 90,000 fans screaming for him to fail?

Smith has the better & more acurate arm. Can he stand up to the challenge - then again, what choice does etheir QB have, they both want to start and will have to face that pressure regardless, comes with the territory of being the man under center.

Holley is rather small, yet provides a big target and possesses very good speed, he should see time at the very least on special teams, if not given an opportunity at WR at one point.

The defense played solid and gave the offense trouble all day, without allowing much as far as a ground game is concern.

It was good to see Grant and Harmon make some nice plays at the TE position, but would like to see someone other then a RB or FB catch a ball up the middle - come on TE you have the size and hands, this is a contact sports boys, lets get in there and make some plays!!

My overall assesment is that we are a better team heading into our first game of the season then last year, at least as far as the intensity of the team - are we ready for Clemson? Well we are not an FSU or UM. A better question is, are we ready to play a ULM instead? One good thing is we still have 2-weeks to get ready for Clemson.

The roster is still fill with youth and should make for a very interesting start to the season, the boys will become man in four weeks - welcome to college football in paradise.

The offense in general was not impressive. There were a few nice pass plays, but the running game was stifled. Maybe the defense is that good?

Why did Fanfest have to end as the game was about to begin? The activities were on the other practice field, yet the tables, sparsely stocked merchandise booth, drink sales and most children's activities just shut down before 2 p.m. Hours later, people were dying for drinks and such.

The announcer/D.J. was good. Plus, he stored my cameras during the deluge.

I saw no signs about the event off campus and only two signs on campus. I did not see any TV coverage of the event prior to it.

It would have been nice to see a mock-up of the dome, or some plans in general, for die-hard fans to digest.

A decent number of students showed up, many with complete face and body paint. That was impressive! And they shared their paint with complete strangers. New Owl fans were created on site.

Thing is though the defense knows all of the offense's plays so IMO they should always do better. The real test is going to come this season.

That was pretty fun painting my face up for that. Red face paint is so hard to get off though. I guess we are going to be trying to do that at all the games and try and show up at some of the sports that don't get much support.

I thought last year's event was much better. I think the team looked much bigger than last year's team. The offense needs some work. The defense looked great.

I've noticed that the team looks bigger this year as well…we only have 2 years of true 1-A recruits so it makes sense we see a noticeable difference
