RUMOR FROM LONGHORN COUNTRY

A friend of mine who is a Texas alumnus and a huge follower of Texas football mentioned that Texas might be going to a two QB set at times this year.

Apparently they want to get the most out of the athletic ability of their second team QB. That means that they might put two QBs in the backfield at once in what would be sort of like the old Arkansas wildcat formation.

This isn't gospel. Just something coming out of Austin. If it is true it could be difficult for FAU to prepare for. Especially if it is unexpected.

Could be… maybe that's why they haven't been letting the media take in practices. They don't want opposing teams to prepare for their 2 QB system.

Re: RUMOR FROM LONGHORN COUNTRY

It has been thrown around in Austin about using QB John Chiles at WR since Texas is so short on experience at that position. I wouldn't call that an actual two-QB formation, although it does open up more options for trickeration.

Here's an article about Chiles to double as QB-WR?

Chiles could also line up in the backfield in shotgun formation next to McCoy. That opens up the offense since Chiles could receive direct snaps and then either run or throw.

The biggest thing is that it makes it harder for defenses to prepare for if there are two passing threats lined up in the backfield during shotgun formations.

Owl's Nest

Basically, Chiles has shown some brilliance running the ball but as a passing QB he leaves much to be desired.  Some of us Horns are scratching our heads why he is listed as the back up, when the 3rd string QB is better.  Colt's INT problem wasn't really his fault.  He lost the line which protected Vince and him in the 2006 season (a few went to the NFL).   Colt was at the mercy of a o-line which was constantly being shuffled, had little experience, and several injuries.  (Some of the prospects which were supposed to help out are now playing at other schools because of academic reasons.)  Last year, Colt was running for his life the majority of the time and losing his deep threat (Limas was hurt when he played with a wrist injury and about 1/2 way he opted for surgery) did not help matters.

The defense was terrible yet again, save 1 game (vs. the Sun Devils), so it was a real accomplishment for Colt and the offense to still win 10 games, IMO.

Re: RUMOR FROM LONGHORN COUNTRY

My opinion on texas is pretty simple, you get a lot of hype because you're texas. You can't deny that. Its like the Yankees getting the burn they do because there the yanks but d-rays can blow them away. (And I live in NYC and grew up a yanks fan). Texas is a very good football team but FAU is getting them at the best possible moment, you'll be a much better team in November then in August. You have a young team that has experience but your depth doesn't.

Your team last year played awesome vs. ASU but barely showed up vs. UCF and Arkansas State. I think UCF is an awful football team, that was the most boring bowl game I've ever seen in my life. ASU we beat. The overall parity in college football just isn't there anymore.

Anyone who says FAU doesn't have a chance against this young texas football team with a new cordinator and seven new starters on defense with depth that has no experience is only kidding themselves. If the d backs can shut down the passing and the linebackers and d line can slow the run the OWLS will have a shot.

I wouldn't spend all this money and give up my labor day weekend in the hamptons to fly to austin texas to watch this game if I didn't think FAU had a chance.

A perfect game by the owls and couple of turnovers by the cows and FAU will win.

I hope they do go to the two QB system. Our linebackers will lock it down.

Re: RUMOR FROM LONGHORN COUNTRY

The way UT will run their offense this year may be somewhat similar to the '06 Gaytors where Leak was the main QB with Tebow coming in to gain yardage where Leak and the RB's could not.

"Our linebackers will lock it down."

I'm sure your linebackers are well coached & give a lot of effort but from a pure athleticism standpoint, they aren't in the same class as Chiles…….
