Rusty weighing surgery...

“I definitely have an AC sprain in my left shoulder. I’m out for the season. Now it is up to me to decide if I want to have surgery. It is a decision that me and my family need to make. If we decide to have the surgery it is schedule for this Friday morning. It is up to us on what we feel is best for me”, said Smith.

Re: Rusty weighing surgery...

Spoke with Ted Hutton about this tonight, as it's been very difficult to get to FAU lately for any practices with the new position at work…

Anyway, Ted was kind to offer that Rusty opted out of the surgery based on a couple of key factors:

1.  The injury will heal in time for the combines.

2.  The surgery would not have prevented a future injury.

After all, it's not his throwing shoulder and, surgery is invasive - period.

The body is designed to heal itself with proper nutrition and regimen…

Believe he made the right choice…

Re: Rusty weighing surgery...

It does take longer to heal without the surgery.

I suffered  a pretty severe rotator-cuff injury about 3 years ago (playing softball thinking I was 18 again).

I elected not to have surgery as well…lots of rehabbing (very painful) and was told later that I made a good decision.  I have no ill effect from that injury.

Six to eight weeks of rehab will probably get Rusty back to where he can get ready for the combines.

Re: Rusty weighing surgery...

Depends on what type of tear…some can become degenerative later on down the line. I'm sure he is carefully weighing his options

a "complete" A/C separation...third degree acromioclavicular ligament tear, will NEVER - EVER heal on its own unless Jesus Christ himself comes back to heal it

who knows more than the head coach?
