Six Players to Watch in FAU’s Spring Game

Who to Watch on Saturday

It’s almost over. Fourteen practices are in the book, and Florida Atlantic will wrap up spring camp Saturday afternoon with a scrimmage at FAU Stadium.

While fans haven’t seen the team since last December, they will get there chance to on Saturday – and they should keep their eyes on a few different players.

With questions surrounding a handful of positions, I have provided a six-pack of players who have had their moments during spring practice. The coaching staff appears to be happy with the team’s efforts this spring, but there is still room for improvement. Below is a list of six players to watch in the scrimmage.

#14 Jaquez Johnson QB - Offensive coordinator Brian Wright said after Wednesday’s practice that no quarterback has emerged from the three man race. Johnson (pictured above) is the newcomer to the group after enrolling in January, and has passed the eye-test just based upon his size. The question will be, how can he perform in a game situation?

#28 Jeremy Glinton WR - We all know what William Dukes and Daniel McKinney can do for the receiving corps, but who will play alongside them? Glinton, a shifty sophomore, has been the standout on offense this spring and looks like a lethal option in the slot. Look to see if he makes an impact in the scrimmage.

#21 Tony Moore RB - FAU is deep at running back and Moore probably wont see many carries next fall, but the redshirt-junior has had a great spring. Moore is a hefty 220 pounds, and is a solid blocker. He has shown flashes in the passing game, and could become the team’s third-down back.

#90 Shalom Ogbonda DT - Ogbonda redshirted last season with the goal of developing and bulking up. Six months later he is rotating with the first team defense and playing both tackle and end. Defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis has mentioned the play of Ogbonda multiple occasions, and is expecting the freshman to contribute to the rotation.

#2 DeAndre Richardson WR - Richardson missed all of the 2012 season with an ankle injury, but is now fully recovered. With Dukes already the team’s top vertical threat, can Richardson regain his 2011 form in which he led the offense in receiving yards? A strong outing Saturday could be the answer.

#37 David Lozanider LB - Randell Johnson missed some practices this spring with an injury, which opened the door for other individuals to take reps. Lozanider switched positions from safety to linebacker at the start of camp, and filled in nicely at times for Johnson. It will be interesting to see how the athletic linebacker performs in the scrimmage when he gets on the field.
