South Carolina Defense Takes Another Hit

South Carolina Defense Takes Another Hit

"Starting defensive tackle Nathan Pepper could miss two to three weeks after spraining his right ankle in the first half of a 41-37 loss at Georgia, Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier said Sunday.

Spurrier said Pepper is doubtful for Saturday’s game against Florida Atlantic. The Gamecocks already are without middle linebacker Rodney Paulk, who sustained a season-ending knee injury against N.C. State, and defensive tackle Ladi Ajiboye, who is set to return from a three-game suspension Sept. 24 against Mississippi."

I would never wish injuries on any player or team, even the gators, but suspensions (especially for conduct) no problem.

GO OWLS!

Senior safety Darian Stewart is now questionable for Saturday night's game against Florida Atlantic (7 p.m., pay-per-view) due to a pinched nerve in his neck, defensive head coach Ellis Johnson said.

"Darian's health is critical," Johnson said, "because we don't have any quality depth in the secondary."

Between injuries, illnesses and suspensions, The Cocks will be pretty weak on D tomorrow. Let's hope Rusty and the boys take advantage of that.

Not a lot of experience but a lot of talent at the safety and spur (safety-backer hybrid) spots. A couple of guys should be playing with a chip on their shoulders: Damario Jeffrey a freakishly quick 6'4 215lb safety got embarrassed last week versus UGA, and Alonzo Winfield a 6'0 222lb spur with sub 4.4 speed lost his job to a younger player.

Stewart would be a big loss though. He's our most experienced and proven DB and the leader of the secondary. He's an unheralded guy, but a big time play maker who'll be a solid pro when he's done here.

Losing Pepper is a big hit to a wounded interior DL. We'll just have to hope Travian Robertson continues his excellent first campaign at DT and that powerful converted LB Melvin Ingram is up to the challenge.
