Ten 2013 FAU Football Stats to Note

Post

Final league stats are in, and there are some noteworthy observations for Florida Atlantic when compared to the rest of C-USA. Here's a list of 10 which I found intriguing from both sides of the ball, and some places that lie in between.

1. FAU was one of just six teams to outscore their opposition, joining Marshall, ECU, MTSU, UNT, and Rice.

2. That is also were they ranked in points scored per game: sixth (26.4 pg).

3. Florida Atlantic gave up just 267 points to opponents for the year, second to only UNT (231).

4. Pass defense for the Owls  was top notch at 161.5 yards per outing, and allowed a league low 11 TD's.

5. Thanks to the leg of Sean Kelly, the Owls took top honors in punting with 37.6 yards per attempt.

6. However Florida Atlantic posted a 90.0% efficiency on PAT (36-of-40) - which was the worst in C-USA.

7. FAU allowed a league low 17.2 1st downs PG, and none fared better on opponents' 3rd down tries (33.5%).

8. The Owls removed 10.8 penalty yards per contest over 2012, and 27.7 when compared against 2011.

9. An announced home attendance average of 14,552 per game was the lowest figure in the conference.

10. FAU attempted zero on sides kicks, and had zero tried against them.

Looking ahead to 2014, Coach Charlie Partridge and the Owls will need to find replacements for the loss of six starters on offense and five on defense.

However, a few quality signings combined with the systemic continuity of retaining Offensive Coordinator Brian Wright and Co-defensive coordinator Jovan Dewitt, could have the squad primed to make a run at a divisional title next year.

Excellent work. Interested to see where we end up ranked nationally on defense, though I've seen some people tear us apart because "it's not hard to play well on defense when you're going up against the NMSUs of the world."

This is one of the biggest questions moving into the offseason: how can we score more points? Or perhaps more specifically, why didn't we score more points in the second half of the season after Quez settled into his role?

It doesn't surprise me that's the number but I'm surprised we're the lowest in the conference.

Really surprised. That team to the south must sell a lot of tickets that aren't being used.

????

2nd half of season began with Marshall and Auburn - both strong programs - and Tulane, and all 3 are in Bowl Games with Auburn in the National Championship game. And we did average 31 a game including those 3 games!

The home attendance was hurt badly in the final home game vs. FIU while we were on a roll. It was on Black Friday and campus was on holiday break. BAD planning and scheduling as it turned out.

No way UAB had higher attendance...no way.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Attendance stats are always bogus, maybe second place to listed height..what you can say is no matter what was reported for FAU….we have work to do.  WIN.

Avg yards per punt is not always a good indicator of how good a punter is. If he kicks it out of bounds on the 2 with a 35 yeard punt, thats a great punt.

You have seen the man punt, right?

FAU (Chun) needs to sell more football tickets. They have to stop scheduling games at 12noon and on Black Friday. They have to find a way to get senior citizens interested from Broward and Palm Beach (they have the time, money and love sports). FAU needs to give tickets away to businesses and in contests. They have to attract big name singers for the national anthem. They have to invite as many high school players and coaches possible. They have to invite as many community football teams and families as possible. They have to recognize as many community groups, elementary school age students and local stars as possible at half-time. They have to continue to make it a no brainer for FAU students to come to the game (make it as easy as possible to attend with as many give aways and incentives as possible). All of this is the athletic director's responsibility.

FAU (coaches and players) have to win games and be an exciting team to watch play.

The noon and Black Friday game was due to TV.  So if they get offered to be on TV, they will be scheduled again.  We won't be giving tickets to businesses…I have never gone to a game because of the person who was singing the national anthem…I am content with the marching band playing it.  They due invite as many high school coaches and players as possible, it's call recruiting.  There are community groups at every game and they are announced on the scoreboard, you must be in the restroom.  The bottom line that will improve attendance, they have to win.
