Texas Game Observations

What a waste of $29.95! I missed a good part of the game to satellite-affected rain, and then got to see an FAU team that forgot to bring its defense. And listening to those Fox Sports Southwest homers made me sick.

Geeze!

I have a question for the coaches. If these monster OOC games are no longer considered "advanced training," then why do you pull the best quarterback in the conference (and maybe some other first-teamers?) in the middle of the third quarter?!

You did at at Florida when the game was still competitive, and now again tonight in Austin. Is Rusty Smith somehow going to be better against UAB with little more than a half game under his belt? Wouldn't his confidence (and stats) have benefited from completing the game with another TD or two?

Is FAU somehow going to look better in the box score and on countless news replays by losing by six touchdowns instead of three or four? Is VanCamp the future of this team? Can he complete a pass?

The nation will only see the score and not realize the first team was out for more than a quarter. It's about perception and FAU just let down tonight.

For the defense and coaches, is it a prerequisite to give every receiver 5 to 10 yards of space during each pass play? Where was the secondary, especially during expected pass plays? Where was the tackling?

Did the punt team practice at all in the pre-season?

Troy, Arkansas State, La-Monroe and maybe even MTSU are going to blast the owls unless the defense gets a clue.

The good news is, FAU can probably beat hapless UAB.

So much for all that hype.

Clearly, the offense has some great receivers (especially Grant and Gent) and a good QB (minus the mental mistakes in throwing late over the middle, calling a timeout to save a half-yard penalty). Edgecomb was very impressive on a few runs, as was that other runner who nicely returned some kickoffs. William Rose was a stud, but didn't get enough balls or carries. of course, he dropped the ball twice (got lucky both times).

It was embarrassing.

EDIT: I am now listening to interviews with Texas players, saying how they "held" FAU to 10 points, and how FAU was paid back for "talking all the trash." No one will remember how Howard threw in the towel in the third quarter!

And finally, pictures will be posted soon.

Re: Texas Game Observations

this team was similar to the 2004 team as far as experience. You wouldn't know it. they were arguing between them in the huddle, pointing at each other. coach S was worried that they would relax after the NO bowl win but yet he filled their heads that they were tougher than Texas and could/would win this game.

Now I understand, If we play outside the sunbelt, we will only play half a game. Now I have it figured out. So, next time I'll save my money. I feel like a fool.

Re: Texas Game Observations

We've lost big before. The difference this time is we we expected more. There was talk of upset. A vastly improved team with one more year of experience. The "ornery bastards" comment. All the media coverage talking possiblity of an upset. What a let down. Can't describe the feeling.
