Former Dolphin Seiple retires

BOCA RATON – Florida Atlantic University offensive coordinator Larry Seiple is retiring after five years with the Owls.

"I just think it's time," said Seiple, 59, who played for the Dolphins from 1967-77 and was on the undefeated 1972 team. "I had the same feeling as when I was a player. I didn't want it to drag on."

Seiple also was a Dolphins assistant coach from 1988-1999 under Don Shula before being fired by Jimmy Johnson.

Seiple was reunited with FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger when Seiple was hired in 2000 to help establish FAU's football program. Seiple had played under Schnellenberger when the latter was an assistant for the Dolphins, and started his coaching career under Schnellenberger at the University of Miami in 1979.

After one year with the Hurricanes, Seiple went to the NFL, coaching at Detroit and Tampa Bay before returning to the Dolphins.

Seiple also was quarterbacks coach when he started at FAU, and worked closely with Jared Allen, a four-year starter for FAU, and helped the Owls go 20-6 over the last two seasons.

"The kids played hard and never gave up and they turned into a pretty good football team," said Seiple, who also said he will try and get a job in the NFL, possibly as a scout. If he can't find one, "I'll play some golf, do some odd jobs, might even be a bagman at Publix, you never know."

Schnellenberger said Gary Nord will take over as offensive coordinator for the Owls.

Agreed! He came here probably over-qualified like much of the other coaching staff and helped up develop a system we need to achieve!

Now we must move forward in the progress of this problem.. Thank you coach Seiple. I hope you get a NFL job.. you deserve it.

I agree. I have been a fan of his since that great 4th down run he made as a punter for the Dolphins in the palyoffs (I think -- against the Steelers) back in the early 1970s. At FAU, he always was pleasant to alums and, as said before, willing to talk football. I wish him the best.
