The Way Too Early Pre-Season Football Poll by Scout.com - FAU 103

Many questions to answer…agree…but not placing any stock in this…especially when the words "massive changes needed to be made on offense" are used…

Break down the team and say why you believe this??

We have the leading running back returning…and PLENTY of passing weapons as well…

Unless they think JVC is soft…

Defense, fine…offense?

But love the bottom dweller placement!  All the more motivation ;D

103.  Florida Atlantic
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 83
Last year was supposed to be when the team and the program hit its stride, and it didn’t happen. In 2010, FAU will show if it can rebuild and reload with massive changes needed to be made on offense while the defense has to find players who can do something productive. Jeff Van Camp had a nice second half of the season and should be a nice quarterback to work around, but the running game will be key. The schedule will be an issue with a trip to UAB the only possible non-conference win, if everything breaks right, while trips to Michigan State, USF, and Texas won’t be pretty.

I don't really think we need Scout rankings as motivation  ;D Not earning a post-season berth and finishing under 0.500 is enough motivation for any team that has tasted the success.

About rebuilding the offense… you could see where they'd say that since they don't know our team like we do. After all, just looking at it on paper, you'll notice we lose starters Smith, Harmon, Gent, Bonner, Grant and Rose. That's downright scary. Our best returning guys? JVC and Morris. That's how they see it.

From our viewpoint we list Lestar Jean, Rob Housler, Avery Holley, Xavier Stinson and Darian Williams as guys we EXPECT production from but may not get it since the first 3 can be streaky and Stinson hasn't proven to be as efficient as Rose. Jamal Davis and Amos Wood may also contribute in a big way, as could Chris Jackson, Jeff Blanchard and David Kooi.

I would not be surprised if we run the ball more often next season.

I think that Stinson will benefit greatly from more playing time.  Rolle should become a pretty good player for us & I expect good things from Williams.

I am more concerned about our receivers, we need more consistency from that group.

We do need to plug a few holes on the OL (should be OK thought) and we'll see what develops during spring…the young kids will have to show us how bad they want playing time.  This is one season that I would expect them to push hard for playing time & we could see an influx of youth at key position.

I think we are going to have a great season in 2010.  The 103 ranking is a joke.

We are a top 3 team in the Sun Belt.  If the offensive line can come together this could be a very special season.

I think the ranking of 103 is about right going into the season.

Doesn't mean that's what we will be, but if you were a sports writer and you knew what we did last year and you knew we were keeping a lot of players that were our weakness, and we lost several players that were our strength, what else would someone expect to be ranked going into the season before we even play a down?

There is no reason to believe that we should be ranked higher than 103. When the cupboard was full we didn't perform. We lost a whole lot of talent and the new guys will have to prove themselves before I am confident in this team's ability to rise above 103.

Re: The Way Too Early Pre-Season Football Poll by Scout.com - FAU 103

My 2 biggest concerns going into the season (and they are not big they are huge):

1) Defense…two years ago we had a veteran defense and we were terrible.  Last year we had an inexperienced, but hungry defense and we were terrible.  My hope is that it was a coaching problem that was addressed, but HOPE is a lousy strategy to base any perceived improvement on.

2) O-Line…this past year we had our best O-Line ever IMO.  We went 5-7 with a stud running back and our best O-Line.  The O-Line is the most difficult unit to build and without a solid Line, that impacts everything on offense.  We are losing the entire Line except Center (correct me if I am wrong).  This is huge.  This has been the most understated loss of the team.  Maybe the new Line will be awesome, but MAYBE is a lousy strategy to base any perceived improvement on.

Go with the 103 ranking and let's EARN an increase by beating some teams first!

I agree. I like being the underdog and proving to yourself that your worth a damn. In 2007 nobody would predicted what we were gonna do; win a conference championshipn, beat Minnasota and beat Troy @ Troy! Go to the New Orleans Bowl and beat Memphis. Be the fastest modern NCAA IA football program to go and win a bowl game. Damn, I think we were ranked pretty damn low that year too. So bring it on!

Go Owls!
