Monday was the first day of 7-on-7’s for three new freshman Owls, and while there was a little bit of a learning curve, all of them left with smiles.

Freshman quarterbacks Stephen Curtis and Nick Bracewell took to the field with some knowledge of the offense, but constituently had to ask senior quarterback Jeff Van Camp for assistance with the plays, something expected out of a freshman quarterback in their first day of unofficial practice.

“There’s a lot of things to learn and a lot of technique to learn,” Curtis said after the workout. “Jeff’s a big leader, he’s helped a lot.”

When asked the difference between his high school offense and FAU's Curtis remarked, “It’s a lot more complex."

Curtis and Bracewell only took a handful of snaps, and the only completed pass between them was a Bracewell check down to fellow freshman tight end Alex Deleon. Deleon worked with the third team offense and ran some nice routes, looking like a pass-catching tight end in the making. He might make a case for some playing time in the fall.

Overall out of the freshman quarterbacks, I would have to say there pretty even. Multiple times one would throw a great ball then the next one would be not so hot, but they did look impressive. Let’s have this one play out, seeing as were not even close to putting on pads.

One name that FAU fans need to put in their heads entering fall camp is Byron Hankerson. I know your thinking, he’s a walk-on and were very thin at the wide receiver position to begin with, but Hankerson has impressed in workouts multiple times. Today, quarterback David Kooi found him a few times down the field, and they look to have a little chemistry going with the second team offense.

Running backs Willie Floyd, Alfred Morris and Jeff Blanchard were absent from the workout, so that allowed for redshirt freshman Damian Fortner to grab some reps. Fortner looked quick out of the backfield, and it makes you think with him and the others, how deep can FAU be at running back?

Defensively, Marcus Bartles had another interception in 7-on-7 play and he looks ready to pick up where he left off last season. A group of hopefully walk-on defensive backs were on hand, and with most of the scholarship corners not in attendance, they got a shot at playing.

Quarterback Graham Wilbert found Nexon Dorvilus in the end zone on a leaping catch to conclude the workout. Dorvilus has some nice hands, but he needs to work on his speed if he wants to play tight end.

After the workout the offense stayed an additional 15 minutes on the field to work on pass catching. Van Camp thought that the receivers were dropping too many passes.

Former FAU Owl Frantz Joseph was spotted working out with the strength staff and the men’s soccer team on the practice fields. I Didn’t have a chance to ask him what the deal with him was, but he looked in great shape while running with resistance bands.

7-on-7 is set to resume Wednesday at 3:30.
