FAU Coaches at High School Spring Games

Thursday

Thursday night, a majority of the state’s high schools played their spring games, which meant FAU coaches were out on the road evaluating prospects.

Owls’ defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni and assistant Nick Caley were both in the Tampa area for a jamboree, and checked in on a pair of linebackers with offers. The duo evaluated Jordan Griffin and Sawyer Dawson with Armwood, Plant City, Strawberry Crest and Durant all playing at the same location.

Griffin had been considered a UCF-lean at one point, but his recruitment appears to be wide-open now with offers from Wisconsin and Boston College on the table. FAU is in need of linebackers (and would love to get Griffin) but they they were also there to see Dawson, a prospect who’s flown under the radar and is getting primarily mid-level looks.

Bellntoni and Caley also got to see five-star defensive end Byron Cowart and 2016 four-star athlete Tavares Chase. Those two players look to be reaches, but three-star cornerback Aaron Covington is someone who Caley is high on, and holds an FAU offer.

- FAU assistant Dan Shula was at the Cardinal Gibbons game in Fort Lauderdale. Gibbons is stacked with 2016 and 2017 underclassmen, but Shula’s main targets looked to be two-star cornerback Jonathan Graham and two-star safety C.J. Maybin. He also saw three-star defensive tackle Richard McIntosh. Shula has done a great job in Broward County thus far, and Maybin, who has the size to move to linebacker at the next level, could be the next local target.

Friday

FAU coaches stayed local Friday night. The Owls had a pair of assistants at the American Heritage-Delray game. The Stallions faced Palm Beach Lakes, where two-star cornerback Maxwell Howell patrols the boundary. Howell committed to Ohio last summer, but is weighing his other options. FAU has yet to offer, but he's a local kid to keep an eye on.

Heritage-Delray has a host of FBS prospects including three-star cornerback Desmond Cain. FAU's scouting interests might have been more geared towards linebackers Josh Ward and Rondarian Bell - two players that have had a ton of interest this spring. Trenard Davis and Warren Robinson are also on the board.
