FAU Recruiting Notebook 7/10: Camp Recap

The Florida Atlantic football staff held there third camp of summer Monday morning, and a host of local prospects were on display. With a wide variety of talent participating in drills, a few individuals stood out more than others.

Linebackers coach Jovan Dewitt, who organized the event, was pleased with the camp’s attendance and stressed that his goal this summer is to get the coaches working individually with prospects.

Below are the players who were pulled aside or are currently being heavily recruited by the Owls.

Alex Ogle QB Jenson Beach – Ogle (pictured above) has had quit the offseason camp circuit, but is holding his only offer from FAU. The Owls have been involved with the dual-threat quarterback since spring ball, and were excited to finally get him on campus. Offensive coordinator Brian Wright spent a majority of the morning working with Ogle and focused on his mechanics. Ogle said at the conclusion of camp that his recruitment remains open, but he likes the Owls. He will camp at FIU on Tuesday before traveling to Duke this weekend.

Trumaine Washington DB Killian – Washington shut down wide receivers all morning and was the unofficial “MVP” of the camp. While the 3-star corner holds a handful of offers, Monday marked his first camp of the summer. Washington is being courted by running backs coach Kerry Dixon, who is his local recruiter, and noted the bond developing between the two. FAU maybe on the outside looking in, but getting Washington on campus today was crucial.

Jayke Simsheuser TE Rockport (Mo.) – Having traveled all the way from Kansas City, Simsheuser was worked out more than any other player on the field. Tight end coach Jarred Allen pulled Simsheuser aside and threw routes with the prospect for a solid 45 minutes. Simsheuser has soft hands, and could develop into a pass-catching tight end. He is high on FAU and wants to make a decision after visiting Bowling Green later this month.

Gregory Howell RB Coral Gables – Howell didn’t workout on Monday, but he was the highest rated recruit in attendance. Holding an offer from Minnesota amongst  others – FAU is the only in-state school to have offered the running back. Dixon and recruiting coordinator Jeff Sims chatted with Howell extensively and the prospect appeared to be having a good time. He mentioned that an official visit in the fall is a strong possibility.

Erik Lenzen OL Cardinal Gibbons – There weren’t a lot of lineman on hand, but Lenzen was noticeably a standout. Claiming offers from ECU, FIU and Toledo, Lenzen was targeted heavily this spring. While the Owls have yet to offer, one could soon be in the works after Monday’s performance.

Ernest Gordon LB Trinity Christian – Gordon is listed as a safety, but he’s better suited to play closer to the line of scrimmage. He spent the morning working out as an outside linebacker and faired well after running a 4.5 40-yard dash. He plays similar to current Owl's LB Adarius Glanton, and is a free-ranging defender. Navy is the only school to have offered Gordon, but the Owls are getting involved.

Tanner Hearn QB East River (2015) – One of the few underclassmen in attendance, Hearn played a level above what his age suggested. While he needs to grow a few inches, he still throws a great ball and has exceptional footwork. He’s one to watch over the next few years.
