Game Week: FAU vs FIU

Here is the thread for the upcoming Shula Bowl:

What was setting up for a game that would have meaning for both teams, all of a sudden becomes a game being played for pride.

FAU will try to get back to .500 at 6-6 & FIU can't have a winning season, but can fight for another W, something they haven't had a bunch of in a while.  And exceed expectations going into the season.

Some numbers on the Panthers:

Defensively
They give-up - 169.7 yards/Rush, 202.8 yards/Pass & 372.5 Total Yards/Game

Offensively
They average - 92.9 Rush Yards/Game, 192.7 yards/Pass & 285.6 Total Yards/Game

Full stats comparison for the Shula Bowl: Head-To-Head Matchup

The Owls should be able to move the ball on the ground & thru the air, giving hope for Charles to reach the 1,000 yard mark (needs 126 yards).

With the Shula Bowl becoming just another game, how will the attendance be?

Re: Game Week: FAU vs FIU

Both FIU and FAU are playing to get to 6-6.  Only one of us will be bowl-eligible, and depending on what happens with other teams around the country, the backdoor might still be there.

63/68 spots are filled.  19 teams (Including 5 Sun Belt teams) are going after 5 remaining spots.  2 of those spots almost certainly will be filled by Sun Belt teams.  The way the conference is panning out, only 3 of the remaining 5 Belt teams can become eligible.  That leaves an odd man out.  So it may come down to FAU & FIU battling it out for an illusive at-large bid against 14 teams.  15/16 teams going after 3 spots.

Sun Belt Situation
Bowl Slot #1 = Troy
Bowl Slot #2 = ASU
Bowl Slot #3 = MTSU/ULL OR FAU/FIU
At-Large = MTSU/ULL OR FAU/FIU

The OOC teams we are up against for 3 at large bowl slots:
Clemson (Next game South Carolina) - L
NC State (Next game Miami) - L
Virginia (Next game Virginia Tech) - L
Colorado (Next game Nebraska) - L
Louisville (Next game Rutgers) - ?
Memphis (Next game Tulane) - ?
Southern Miss (Next game SMU) - W
UTEP (Next game ECU) - L
Akron (Next game Temple) - ?
Bowling Green (Next game Toledo) - ?
UCLA (Next 2 games, Arizona State & USC) - ?, L
Arizona State (Next 2 games, UCLA & Arizona) - ?, ?
Auburn (Next game Alabama) - L
Hawaii (Next 2 games, Washington State & Cincy) - ?, L

We need UCLA to beat Arizona State, Washington State to stand up, Rutgers to continue playing well and some toss-up games to go our way.  If SMU gets its act together it would help alot but I don't see that happening.

Re: Game Week: FAU vs FIU

FIU does have two game remaining & sitting at 4-6 right now - so they do have a chance to get to an even  6-6 for the season.

I just think it's a stretch for a Belt to go bowling with a 6-6 record - Troy stayed at home with a very respectable 8-4 last season - while teams with worse records from stronger conference went.

We have one major draw back as a conference - attendance & drawing power.

amen

and a third thing you forgot to mention…

national intrigue (hell, even regional intrigue)

ESPN (Disney Company) literally owns the PapaJohns.com Bowl and the St. Petersburg Bowl… they want ratings, just as much as attendance… "Florida Atlantic" and "Florida International" draws poorly to begin with… add in the fact that virtually NO ONE without ties to these schools would actually be interested in WATCHING these 6-6 the game on TV…

fuh-gedda-boudd-it

Re: Game Week: FAU vs FIU

I think the point I was trying to make wasn't that we can compete with any of the remaining teams.  The point was that if the bowl NEEDS a team they are going to pick the last bowl-eligible team available rather than allow the bowl to not be played.  Obviously FAU and FIU cannot compete based on name and would never be picked given other competitors.  But it is not that crazy to think that there won't be enough desirable bowl eligible teams and of FAU, FIU, MTSU, ULL it is almost certain that exactly 2 will be eligible and 1 will go to either New Orleans/Papa Johns/Independence.  The list of teams shows that its not that crazy to think that only 2 of those teams will win.  If that happens, then they WILL come to the Sun Belt knocking and a wretched, poorly attended, poorly watched bowl game will result….but isn't that the definition of a Sun Belt bowl?

Re: Game Week: FAU vs FIU

Yeah we're not going to a bowl, but at least lets finish .500 it would be great just to say OK we didn't have a great season and we finished at .500. Lets hope we can do better next season. I think this season was a big reality check for a lot of us. I don't think come late August we're going to be talking about how we're going to easily beat Nebraska or how we're going to beat S.Carolina like a lot of us thought we'd beat Texas and Minnesota this season. After the way we started I'll take a .500 season

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

Re: Game Week: FAU vs FIU

I'm not being an FAU apologist or some sort of dreamer.  I was just putting out there what has to happen, not just for FAU but also for FIU, MTSU, and ULL for the Sun Belt (not FAU necessarily) to get a 4th bowl slot.  I'm not a desperate FAU fan grasping at straws, just putting the info out there so that people know what the situation is.

Now lets go win the Shula Bowl.

Don't worry Semin,  usually I'm the one being positive & supportive and looking for any avenues for optimism, just don't feel it right now  :P  :'(

Now, it would great if we have a good showing in the shula bowl & the Owl did position themselves becoming bowl eligible at 6-6.

Strange thing do happen in college football & all the pre-season hype might actually help us during the bowl selection process if it came down to them selecting a 6-6 team.  Some time HYPE does pay-off.
