New editorial from FAUOwl09
Does anyone remember being in elementary school and learning to always follow the rules? Or how about learning that it is always better to tell the truth than to lie? Do you remember that ridiculous belief that “Those who do what’s right will get farther in life than cheaters?” All of that is pretty stupid, huh? Not to mention, none of that is true at all. No it’s not stupid because I think so; it’s stupid because it’s simply false and completely backwards. See, we live in a society where “second chances” are really “keep messing up and we’ll just keep forgetting it happened.” Our society dictates that you do whatever the hell it takes to get to the top. Morals, values, sense of guilt? Long gone. We live in Generation MTV: where cheating and lying dominate, alcohol is a cure-all, and there is absolutely no sense of shame for what we do in the public eye.
So what am I getting at? My school, the college athletics program in which all of my allegiance goes to, is undergoing a coaching search for their men’s basketball team. A campaign has been formed, by casual fans and some media types, supporting a man by the name of Mike Jarvis. Who is Jarvis? Mike Jarvis is the one who gets to the top with no remorse. He’s the one who breaks all the rules, has no sense of what the definition of “morals” is, and, more importantly, completely ruined the basketball program at his previous job at St. John’s University. After paying his players (a clear violation of NCAA rules), taking his players to a strip club (hopefully it was at least a classy one, you would hope), and neglecting to punish a single one after a handful were caught smoking marijuana, St. John’s self-imposed sanctions and punished itself to keep the NCAA from coming down even harder. Wow, talk about a laundry list of problems. What makes this story turn from sad to despicable is the fact that our school’s administration is in fact interviewing and inquiring about the services of this man as our next head coach. Ahhh, only in America, where you can break NCAA rules AND federal laws and still gets looks for a six-figure job! Can you find an argument for a “second chance” for this man? Sure. Had he taken his players to a strip club and realized what he did was wrong, I would forgive him. Had he neglected to punish a player, or two, or three, for testing positive for marijuana, I would question him and then make sure he stayed on his players like butter stays on toast. Had he paid his players and blatantly spit in the face of the NCAA rulebook, I would never trust him again, but understand people mess up and he just needs to be watched over with a damn strong microscope! However, this man was fired for allegedly committing all three of these violations. When is enough, enough? After being canned, what were his parting words for the university? He complained about his six-figure salary and the school’s “poor facilities.” Wow Coach! Is that all you have to say for yourself? “I won 100 games here and I deserved more money. Who cares if I cheated? You underpaid me!” You, sir, are pathetic!
So this is who is being interviewed in the pool of candidates for this job. This is who the local newspaper journalist who covers Florida Atlantic University supports and predicts will get the job. In his words: “The positives far outweigh the negatives.” Translation: “Winning is more important than setting high character values for your players.” What a sad day in America. And I truly feel that way. Is that how the average American really feels now-a-days? If your goal is attainable both by legal and illegal means, but it’s much easier and faster if you take the illegal path, are we all going to choose the illegal way? If a high school is choosing between Florida Atlantic and Florida State, FAU may be a lot more desirable if Coach Jarvis is there offering that kid money in pocket! What a sad, sad day in America.
Sure, taking questionable coaches is not out of the norm. Central Florida took George O’Leary after he lied on his resume when applying for the coaching gig at Notre Dame. Bobby Knight never seems to be socially punished for his charades of hitting players or throwing chairs from the bench on the court. Coaches can forget their obligation to kids and jump from job to job for more and more money; if a player wants to leave a university, they have to sit out and lose a year of eligibility. So, what is the moral of the story? UCF is certainly not regretting hiring O’Leary – because he is winning. That is sad. Winning is more important than telling the truth. Texas Tech had a couple of seasons of reaching the tournament under Knight. That is sad. He hit a player at Texas Tech, just like he hit multiple players at Indiana. Billy Gillepsie, Mark Turgeon, Darrin Horn, Rex Walters… all coaches who hocked a gigantic wad of spit at their players and left them for a different school with more money. Forget obligations. Forget character. Forget the truth. Hell, even forget to keep your hands to yourself. Win at all costs and everything will be right in your world!
If Florida Atlantic hires Mike Jarvis – a man of ZERO character, ZERO morals, ZERO rules and ZERO shame – it will be the saddest day for this Owl fan: me. I cannot and will not support this cheater. I cannot and will not support this man. I am not riding a “high horse,” but I do believe college athletics is turning into a shameful business of limited rules and zero values. The only rule I see in today’s game: “Just win, baby.” What a sad day, indeed.

i really do…
i just wanted to ask, respectfully, if you realize that the allegations have been dismissed at this point in time? And that he was not convicted of anything?…Finally, that they perhaps rushed to judgment too quickly - to the allegations - in order to "uphold timely justice" and apease a "starving for vengeance" media and fan base?
No argument here, just discussion…but i would like to hear your reply to these questions…

"FYI", how about you just read what he has to say and TRY to understand (sorry he writes ABOVE your level of comprehension).
You must not of been taught properly in Canada…
*Sigh* Here we go again.
Thanks for the tip but I read every word. I like the idea, but my point is there are too many words and his main idea gets lost because it's too verbose. (I'll define that word for you if you want, butterfly. And your attempt at an insult should have read "You must not HAVE been taught properly in Canada.")

butterfly: thanks for your support and kind words… i appreciate it
canadian: i took your first FYI as a joke and i thought it was funny… however, in response to your second post and reply to butterfly, i understand your feeling that its verbose and too long, but it is what it is… i said from the beginning, if it's too long, don't read it… these are my feelings and i was writing as it came to me, with no editing
florida owl: i'll address your questions tomorrow, promise… just got home from work and it's way too late to think right now, lol

No worries, I guess my university-system sarcasm was lost on some people.
But I do understand what you're saying, it's just that if you are submitting this to various "authorities" sometimes being overly wordy doesn't help you get your point across. That's all I was trying to say.

I second that sentiment. I approach various people at FAU and I have too many ideas. I think they just tune it out after the first couple of sentences.
So I throw in a couple of drawings to spice things up a bit.
