Saint Francis at a Glance:
St. Francis hasn't had a winning season since 2003, but that didn't prevent them from grabbing one of the more notable early-season college basketball upsets.
The Terriers beat Miami 66-62 in overtime on Friday, and shocked the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions.
Junior forward Jalen Cannon posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and led a St. Francis team that hails from the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of New York.
Due to some crafty scheduling on their part, St. Francis is spending the weekend in South Florida and looking to carry the momentum of their win into the season.
St. Francis was 12-18 last year under coach Glenn Bracia and 8-10 in Northeast Conference play. Braica is now in his fourth season with the program and hoping to turn not the corner at a school that has been playing basketball since 1901.
Cannon is without a doubt Bracia's top talent, and a scorer that can rebound. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 8.8 rebounds a game last season and has had outings where he pulled down 19 and 20 boards.
Outside of Cannon, the Terriers will get production from freshman forward Wayne Martin, who was used as a sixth-man off the bench against Miami. Matin scored a team-high 17 points in the win and has the ability to knock-down outside shots.
St. Francis hasn't opened a season with back-to-back wins since 2001.
FAU at a Glance:
The Owls opened their season on a high note with a 86-51 rout of Ave Maria on Friday.
With so many new faces and questions lining the team, it was the reliable Jackson Trapp who paced the squad with a career-high 23 points.
Trapp – who received a battle field promotion to the team's starting point guard role last season – was 5-of-12 from 3-point range and finished with eight rebounds. He was used as more of a shooting guard in the victory, as freshmen D'Andre Johnson and Marquan Botley ran the offense.
Johnson became the fourth freshman guard to start a season-opener at FAU in the last four seasons, and he registered four points and four assists in 25 minutes of action. Botley scored 12 points and was 3-of-5 shooting behind the arc.
FAU coach Mike Jarvis was pleased with his team's efforts and was impressed with the play of both Johnson and Botley.
"I thought they did well," Jarvis said. "What we're looking for is those guys to give us a real presence at the point guard position, and I thought they did well. They complimented each other well and didn't have a lot of turnovers."
The Owl's big men should get tested against St. Francis, which means the development of center Dragan Sekelja will be in the limelight. The senior didn't score a point against Ave Maria and wasn't much of an offensive factor.
Jarvis used three other centers in the opener, with San Francisco transfer Justin Raffington seeing the most action out of the trio. He produced six points and showed some flare around the basket that could warrant more playing time.
Jarvis was able to play the entire roster in the win over Ava Maria, but that shouldn't be expected against a St. Francis squad that just beat Miami.
"I'm expecting a good game, those guys aren't afraid to play anyone," Jarvis said. "We're not going to play everybody every night. Most of the time it's going to be eight or nine guys while the young guys develop."
In honor of Veterans Day all active duty, reserve, and retired members of the military will receive five dollar admission to the game.
Latest Line:
TBD
Owl's Nest Prediction
This matchup got a lot more interesting after both team's performances to open the season. FAU looked better than expected against an NAIA opponent, while St. Francis beat an ACC opponent that made the Sweet-16 a year ago. We think that this one could be a tightly contested game that comes down to the final few possessions.
