The board overseeing Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned universities this morning named Frank T. Brogan, chancellor of the State University System of Florida, as the system's next chancellor, voting by conference call to offer him the job over two other undisclosed finalists in a process marked by secrecy.

Mr. Brogan is a career educator. He takes the job effective Oct. 1.

This morning's vote by 15 of the 20-member board of governors for the State System of Higher Education took place via conference call from the system's Harrisburg headquarters. It was unanimous.

Sorry to hear this, liked having our former president head of the system. Does he really want to go into that territory considering the Penn St. mess? I would not!

Wow! I certainly wish him the best. The way to continue making a name for himself is, of course, to turn that lumbering operation around (even though I don't think it includes Penn State). It will be interesting to watch. I still think back to his lieutenant governor days and wonder whether he is destined to return to electoral politics (as opposed to academic politics). He is very smart, very personable and was very effective at FAU. Considering the limited power and authority of his position in Florida, this is a pretty big step up. I wonder whether Jeb Bush served as a reference....

The guy is amazing. I wish him the best of luck in PA. Wish we would have had him for a little longer here at FAU.
