I'm sure they'll cut the A/C and make us roast our balls off like usual.

Re: More budget woes for FAU...

Welcome to the new reality in Florida.  It's not just FAU – it's everywhere, every level of education.  Thank your legislators for this one.  We are finally seeing the price of all the tax cutting that they and Jeb and now Charlie have pushed.  Progressive taxes have been almost wiped out.  Intangibles tax – gone.  Property tax is now in the crosshairs.

We are now almost totally dependent on the regressive sales tax, which is anything but dependable.  In poor economic times, people spend less, tourists travel less, and the poorest residents, who pay the greatest portion relative to their incomes, generally are the first to cut back.  Spending on big ticket items usually falls off; the auto manufacturers say this is going to be the worst year in a decade.

And Charlie's not going to allow a significant tuition increase.  It was like pulling teeth to get the last meager one.

I think about all these biotech companies that we're trying to attract to Florida.  These people will demand that their children be educated in quality schools.  Instead, we have this – a grossly underfunded K-12 system, and now, colleges and universities that can't pay the bills, either.  Cut funding, push more testing, but let's make sure we hand the tax money – we'll call them "scholarships" because it sounds better – over to private schools, which generally are not subject to any kind of state regulation and testing whatsoever.  The hypocrisy in Tallahassee is so thick, that if it weren't so serious, it would be laughable.

Get used to it, people.  This is going to get bad.  If you think the public education system in Florida sucks now, you ain't see nuthin' yet.
