Boca Raton to request $1.1 billion from economic stimulus package

Boca Raton - In anticipation of a federal spending spree, Boca Raton is asking for about $1.1 billion for construction and "green" projects in the city.

A letter outlining the city's request will be mailed to state and federal legislators who represent the city today. In it, Mayor Susan Whelchel asks for $500 million for a new Boca Raton Community Hospital, a project the nonprofit hospital abandoned because of its ailing finances. The 75 other city projects would cost about $618 million and generate almost 20,000 jobs.

President-elect Barack Obama is calling for somewhere around $775 billion for a stimulus plan to jump-start the sagging economy. While spending on infrastructure such as roads and bridges is expected to be a major component, the criteria for local projects to win funding have not been publicized.

Whelchel said the upcoming stimulus package would be an opportunity to procure money for Boca Raton Community Hospital, whose financial losses have made its plans for a new facility improbable. Jerry Fedele, the hospital's chief executive officer, said he appreciated the city's efforts.

That is actually better than draining the resources of our local benefactors.
