FAU Softball Splits With Troy Despite Controversy

Amber Jones scored four runs on the day as the Florida Atlantic University softball team split a doubleheader with Troy University on Saturday.

In the first game, the score was tied at two in the top of the seventh when confusion over the pitch count led to controversy. FAU (20-19, 3-4) had runners at first and second with two out, when Amber Barton took what was believed to be ball four and Amber Jones and Amy Bukovich began to advance. However, the home plate umpire ruled that the count was only 2-2, not 3-2, allowing Troy catcher Felicia Hammer to throw Jones out on what was officially ruled a caught stealing. The game advanced to extra innings before a Carrie Ann Potter wild pitch allowed the Trojans to score the winning run and take the game 3-2.

FAU scored early in the nightcap as Blair Bodenmiller drove in Jones on an RBI single to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Jones scored again in the top of the third inning, this time on a fielder’s choice by Kerri Croney that allowed FAU to retake the lead 2-1. Jones’ third run of the game came in the top of the seventh when an Amy Bukovich base hit allowed her to score. Rose Gressley retired the Trojans in order in the seventh for her fifth win of the season as FAU won 3-1.

The Owls will wrap up their trip through Alabama on Sunday when they play Troy in the decisive third game. Sunday’s game will start at 2 p.m. eastern.
