Softball In Championship Game of 2011 Sun Belt Tournament

No. 2 seed Florida  Atlantic shut out No. 5 seed Troy 11-0 in six innings to advance to the championship game on Day 3 of the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship on Friday.

Florida Atlantic (34-24) advances to the finals to face the winner between No. 1 seed Louisiana-Lafayette and No. 3 seed South Alabama on Saturday. The Owls are the only other team besides Louisiana-Lafayette to claim a Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship, earning the title in 2007.

Brittany Walker led FAU at the plate by tallying three hits in for three RBI and scoring three runs. Rose Gressley (20-12) led the Owls in the circle by only allowing two hits and striking out four in four innings of work.

FAU’s bats came alive in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs off four hits to take the early lead when four different Owls registered RBIs. Brittany Walker singled and Carly Speerin doubled to each knock in one run a piece, and Heather Barnes and Cari Curfman had two-RBI singles to add to the total.

Walker then homered to left field to extend FAU’s lead to 7-0.

Troy’s Nikki Hollett doubled to left center in the bottom of the fourth then advanced to third on the next play, but Lauren Griffith grounded out to end the inning and leave Hollet on base in scoring position.

The Owls ran away with the game in the sixth by scoring four more runs off of Walker’s RBI-double, Barnes’ two-RBI single and Speerin’s sacrifice fly to bring in Barnes.

The championship game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. eastern on Saturday. Live stats of the game will be available at www.fausports.com. The game will air tape delayed on the Sun Belt Network (CSS locally) at 7 p.m. eastern.
