Florida Atlantic University Athletics has named Brooke Kohler as head coach of its sand volleyball program. She also will serve as an assistant for the indoor volleyball team. Fernanda Nelson, FAU’s head indoor volleyball coach and director of volleyball, will oversee the sand volleyball program.
“I’m excited to welcome Brooke to the FAU volleyball family. Her passion and knowledge of the game will be a tremendous asset. I have no doubt that she will lead the sand volleyball program in the right direction,” said Nelson. “Having coached Brooke as a player, we are familiar with each other and that will make it a lot easier to work together.”
After graduating from Jupiter High School where she led the Warriors to a state Final Four appearance as a senior, Kohler attended Clemson University. The Tigers made two trips to the NCAA Tournament in her time in uniform.
Kohler received her bachelor’s degree in health science from Clemson, but still had eligibility remaining when she transferred to Florida Gulf Coast University to pursue her graduate degree. She played two seasons for the Eagles. In 2011, when Nelson was an assistant coach, Kohler led the FGCU indoor team in total blocks. That spring, Kohler and teammate Brittany Muse won the Flight No. 3 title at the inaugural Atlantic Sun sand volleyball tournament. The duo also was named to the all-tournament team. The following season, Kohler helped the Eagles to the Atlantic Sun regular season indoor title and advanced to the final day of the conference tournament in sand volleyball.
Kohler supplemented her on-court experience with a coaching position at Jupiter Elite Beach Volleyball and as a camp counselor for the Clemson volleyball camps, where she designed innovative team practices for young and emerging players, as well as introducing individual drills focused on improving skills and endurance.
