FAU Women’s Swimming & Diving Scores Third Straight Victory Over Rival FIU

Victories in nine of the 12 events led the Florida Atlantic University women’s swimming and diving team to a decisive dual meet victory, 135-87, over rival Florida International University on Saturday – marking the Owls third triumph over the Panthers this season.

Brisk weather conditions at the FAU Aquatic Center caused an abbreviated dual meet schedule.

“Under the cold and windy conditions, I wanted the girls to stay focused on winning the meet,” said Head Coach Steve Eckelkamp.  “They were able to concentrate on swimming fast and that led to some strong performances, with nine event victories.”

Three of those victories were captured by standout freshman swimmer Eszter Bucz.  The Budapest , Hungary native won the 500-yard freestyle by seven seconds with a time of 5:20.73; won the 200-yard individual medley by more than three seconds (2:14.38); and swam the second leg of FAU’s winning 200-yard individual medley team.

Sophomore Jonna Nyback led wire-to-wire to pick up victories in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events.  The Koping, Sweeden native posted a time of 54.83 in the 100-yard race and had a top time of 1:56.98 in the 200-yard event.  She also joined sophomores Arielle Newnam and Erin Hersey, and Bucz on the winning 200-yard individual medley team, which won in 1:55.09.

FAU’s other individual winners included Newnam, a winner in the 50-yard freestyle (26.91) and 100-yard backstroke (1:01.80); Hersey, who won the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.42); and sophomore Ewa Jamborska, who placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.15).

In diving, freshman Maegan Butler tallied 242 points from the judges to finish second in the 1-meter event, while senior Stephanie Goodman placed third with 233.70 points and freshman Christina Sterman had 233.60 points for fourth place.  Sterman was the Owls’ highest finisher in the 3-meter diving competition, finishing second with 251.90 points, while Butler was third (235.45) and Goodman was fourth (223.85).

FAU returns to the pool next Saturday, January 16, when it travels to battle in-state rival University of Florida in Gainesville .
