Men's Soccer: Western Michigan Upends Owls 2-1

The Florida Atlantic men’s soccer team fell to Western Michigan 2-1 on a windy Saturday night at FAU Soccer Stadium.

The Owls (4-6-2, 0-3-0) had the wind in their favor in the first half and took a 1-0 lead after Jordan Kelly scored his first goal of the season in the 31st minute.  Kelly connected on the header after Jose Guerra sent a perfectly placed cross into the box just past the outstretched foot of a Broncos defender.

Despite the early lead, FAU missed out on several first half scoring opportunities that included eight shots and six corner kicks as the offense was able to move the ball well against the Broncos’ defense.

In the second half, the Broncos (5-8-0, 2-1-0) worked with the wind in their favor and began to move the ball successfully.  Western Michigan evened the game in the 52nd minute when Darren Jones scored off a Tyler Rosenhagen assist to make the score 1-1.

Both teams traded unsuccessful scoring opportunities until the final moments of the game when Western Michigan’s Saeed Sulemana Baba gave the Broncos a 2-1 lead with his 9th goal of the season in the 87th minute.  Baba was able to slip into the box and head in a cross from Yilson Asani who tallied the assist.

Ciro Martinez started the game in net for the Owls as the freshman tallied eight saves.  Casey Aubil made four saves in net for Western Michigan.

The Owls will be back in action on Monday night when they travel to Miami to take in-state rival Florida International.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
