Swimming & Diving: Owls Defeat FIU In Decisive Fashion

Winning 10 of the 13 events, the Florida Atlantic University women’s swim team picked up its first dual meet victory of the season with a triumph over arch-rival Florida International University by a decisive    143-96 margin.

Sophomore Jonna Nyback captured victories in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races and swam the opening leg of the winning 200-yard freestyle medley relay team.  She led an impressive performance by the Owls in the 200-yard freestyle event as the team had the top three finishers.  Following Nyback to the finish line in the event was freshman Michala Nowak, second, and sophomore Stephanie Barker, third.

Freshman Eszter Bucz was another three-event winner for FAU.  She posted convincing seven-second victories in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.76) and 200-yard individual medley (2:07.12), and swam the anchor leg of the Owls’ team that won the 200-yard freestyle medley relay event.  Joining Bucz and Nyback on the winning relay team were senior Emily Allen and sophomore Erin Hersey.  Bucz has now won five events and finished second twice in her first three collegiate meets.

FAU had the top three finishers in the 1-meter diving competition.  Sophomore Jennifer Garland led the way with 231.97 points and was followed by freshman Christinia Sterman, second with 227.9 points, and freshman Taylor VanderArk, third with 214.12 points.

Nowak took home top honors in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.06).  Other event victories were posted by sophomore Melissa Miller in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:50.07) and junior Janelle Nassim in the 50-yard freestyle (26.28).

Teaming up to win the 400-yard medley relay race (4:03.44) were sophomores Arielle Newnan, Ewa Jamborska and Elizabeth Starke, and freshman Erin Connolly.

FAU will host an alumni meet as part of homecoming on October 31 at the FAU Aquatic Center.
